Thx for the detailed response, gents.
I don't understand why a minnow being dragged to the bottom 2 ft behind a sinker would be different from a minnow sinking on it's own. Is it the speed that makes the diff?
I don't think the current is the prob in my case-----I could see the dead minnows but not the live ones on a line with a sinker. Surely the unweighted dead ones would have more of a tendency to drift outside the cone?
My starting pt re settings such as sensitivity was the post that James the Xman made on here earlier. He has more patience with laying around with that stuff than I do. After a little while I just want to ignore that stuff and concentrate on the fishing.
I would welcome a chance to fish with you, LS. You seem to really know your stuff!
Re old vs. new, yeah I hear what you are saying!! It doesn't help that Lowrance etc make such a feeble attempt at a manual. Ralph has a simple old Eagle and he can see a micro/mini swivel 100 ft down!!!
I have heard that transducers loose their sensitivity as they get older---maybe like some of us old guys getting hard of hearing. Any truth to this rumor?

Ya, could well be the transducer also. I had to swap anew one a few back.just faulty
as for the minnow thing when you drift them down they can go horizontal,,,,,so larger profile. Also maybe the minnows tossed down are drifting off and your presentation is not, so again cone angle.
Anyways. sounds like I might see you following week, so we can fiddle with it then...bring your manual anyhow so I cna follow the whole reset program if required..Wizard etc.
In the meantime .take a photo next time your fishing and show us what's on the screen. That always helps a lot

Hey Shank, I still use my X-70A on occasion. It will mark a #8 bare treble below 100 feet. Mind you so will my Marcum LX-5 flasher. I reluctantly admit to being somewhat old school but it is really so easy to simply adjust the sensitivity so a small jig of any shape or profile is clearly defined (regardless of depth) on some of the "outdated" monochrome units of yester year.
Yup, there were/are great units.
I still have one on one of my smaller boats at cottage......find those sneaky lakers just off bottom
I also like the fact that you can dial in exact depth you want .ie.....86 feet......... or122 feet instead of 40/60/80/100/140

Ok, so riddle me this you good folks here on LSO:
I went back to the same place last week---same depth of water etc. Could see my sinker clear as a bell near the bottom. The only thing different that I can think of is that I was using a small lead egg sinker and the previous week it may have been a steel egg sinker---bigger but approx the same weight.

You could have answered that one yourrself by swithching back to previous sinker...
either that or your transducer was straight this time.
