For me it's always. I started wearing them after I wiped out on Scugog and nearly smashed my camera and probably came close to a sprain or a fracture in my arm. I've never slipped since.

Always have them with me. Needed them yesterday and today for sure. Have a pair of snow trax and sub zeros. Also some for the boy when he comes out and when he goes tobogganing. I also use snowshoes quite a bit when we have snow. The modern ones with metal claws. A must for me. Just remember to take them off before walking in the house. 😉

I use a deadly combo of ice spikes in my dedicated ice fishing boots (see pic) when walking gets really bad I strap on MSR evo snowshoes. I sometimes walk up to 4kms in fresh snow or glare ice…works great for me

If its slippery, I use cleats. If anything I just find it annoying to have to watch my every step on ice. Sucks to have to run to a hole with a bent rod on bare boots and glare ice. Most of the winter I have my snowshoes on though which have serious crampons.

I used to fish with an operator out of the restaurant that burned down @48 and the Pefferlaw river (forget his name). He broke his leg very severely slipping on the ice. I carry a few pairs and wear them when it's slippery.

Always have mine on. The ice gets very slick inside the hut from the heater, nice to not have to worry about eating it inside the hut. Especially with rods, finder and everything else that can broken inside the hut.

I cut the sharp ends off tech screws to make them shorter then screw them into the bottom of my ice fishing boots. Works great but as mentioned earlier don,t were them in the house.

I got a set of HT super stud cleats on clearance this summer for $10 excited to try then out they look good. I had cheap ones last year but I felt like i could confidently walk alot faster with them on.
