I wear a mustang ice rider suit. I went in last year in this crack.
Almost the whole lake was 14". Trucks were everywhere. There is not a doubt in my mind that my suit saved my life. I was alone and about a mile out. In the water to my chin. Without that suit I would have sunk fast. I was lucky. I will never go on the ice again without a float suit. Ever.
Scary stuff - thanks for sharing- I dont go on the ice without mine.

I dont own one so i voted no.
They cost so much and i only go out on thick ice...lol
I was saving up to get one but then a read on the boards about this one I needed some bibs anyways and with the weather i figured might as well spend a bit more and get one. Makes my wife happy too.
Thing is super warm, lots of pockets (even spots for ice picks) fits well and keep me dry not approved for boat use but thats not what i got it for. (says it will keep you buoyant for 2 hours)
Holy it goes up to size 7XL
I am interested to know how this holds up for you both.
At that price I would be worried about it being built well and lasting.

I am interested in hearing of your ordeal in more detail. Could you please post or in box me your details. I have only went in on purpose in a controlled setting. How long did it take you to get out? Did you need your picks? Did your head get wet or did the suit stop you from submerging past your chin? How cold were you after removing yourself from the water? What did you do immediately after?More Details on a story like this could potentially save a life.

I am new to ice fishing and dont own one YET.
However I am interested in hearing more details from 'steelhed' like 'mmm' questioned... more details about your dip would be great.
I would figure that 14" of ice with trucks all around is safe.. how did you manage to go in? Sitting on your hole and the ice just opened up or what? What should we look out for? was there a loud bang/crack? etc etc.

I was contemplating buying one this fall. However, when I went into a very reputable sailing store, the salesman told me that I would be just as well off wearing my technical cold weather clothing and PFD. He felt that I would be much warmer and more comfortable like that rather than in the floater suit. As well, I'm a walker and I like to be able to take off layers as needed; it seems to me that with a floater suit, it's all or nothing. Floater suits are not dry suits (as I understand it) so if I go through the ice it's going to be painfully cold and wet either way.
Thanks for your post and photo. It just reinforces the point that we are all aware of that no ice is 100% safe.

Don't forget guys if you don't have a float suit and are worried just throw on a life jacket, might look a little out of place but it will still do the job of keeping you floating. I was planning on doing that until i could afford a float suit.
Happy to meet up with anyone who wants to take a look at the suit I have.

I do not own one yet, I will be adding one in the future, due to being short and fat I will want and need a 2 piece. That being said I am very patient waiting for ice, I take a spud and use it like a walking stick so I am always spuding, The boots I wear slip on and off so I can remove instantly, the jacket is also quick removal, I keep my zipper waxed. I do know what cold water feels like as I have I been icediving in the past. If I was working I would own one for this season as it is the type of season that you truly want and need one. Btw I do carry a survival blanket in my gear as well, Small light and worth carrying. Tax time is coming maybe I'll find a clearance one for next year.
