Hi Folks:
Decided we have been waiting long enough for the real winter season to begin. Headed out to Island Grove this morning and after checking with reliable sources who informed us there is at approximately 8 inches of ice in the south west end of the channel between Snake Island and the mainland in the Island Grove area. I personally well not take a chance on the ice in the middle of the channel and to the east corner of Snake Island because I personally observed open water in this area 4 days ago.
We walked out on the ice and crossed the channel. Walking was fine - we encountered a lot of very slippery glare ice (so bring your cleats) with a few areas with 1/2 of inch covered in snow. There were some areas along the shore line where the ice was refrozen broken ice and a bit hard to walk on. For the most part the ice was clear (I could see the bottom of the lake in many areas) and solid - obviously it froze quickly.
Once we checked out the ice while walking we took out the quad and travel was fine. Didn't see any ski doo's out on the lake but I suspect the lake would be OK for travel by ski doo.
Please note - I have no idea what the conditions are on the rest of the lake. I only know what I observed in the specific area I mentioned at the start of this thread.
Hope this information is helpful to other board members.
