Hi Folks:
Just spoke to a friend who has a cottage on Snake Island and he crossed to Snake Island around 5:00 p.m. this afternoon.
Apparently Mike McCue from Snake Island Ice Huts now has 5 or 6 huts out in the channel (off the S.W. tip of Snake Island) - they are bright green.
Apparently there is 6-8 inches of ice in the channel between Island Grove and Snake Island. PLEASE NOTE - I SUSPECT THIS IS ONLY IN THE AREA WHERE MIKE TRAVELS OUT TO HIS FISH HUTS. I PERSONALLY OBSERVED OPEN WATER ALONG THE SHORELINE OF SNAKE ISLAND HEADING TOWARDS SUTTON ACROSS FROM THE ISLAND GROVE FERRY OFFICE ON THURSDAY AFTERNOON as per previous post.
I would suggest if anyone is planning to head out on the ice in this area that you personally check the ice conditions and that you regularly check the ice conditions as you move around on the ice. I don't believe the ice to be reliably safe and consistently frozen. Also, I suggest anyone heading on the ice stay on well travelled areas and only in areas they know.
PLEASE NOTE - I DON'T KNOW THE ICE CONDITIONS FOR THE REST OF THE LAKE AND I SUGGEST PEOPLE SHOULD NOT ASSUME ICE CONDITIONS ON THE REST OF THE LAKE TO BE 6 - 8 INCHES THICK.
Stay safe and I hope this info helps board members. I will try to post updates on the ice in the Snake Island area when I know more.
