Great info.
As a general rule I stay away from any sort of crack. Two years ago my quad went for a swim. Luckily for me i was able to punch the gas quickly to get through it. (barely)

Very interesting article. Here is a statement from this article on which I'm somewhat unclear : " They typically come in when the ice is 2-4” thick, often as ice warms and expands as the cold spell that caused the ice to catch comes to an end." I have always thought ice expands as it cools and freezes and shrinks as it warms and melts. The record breaking temps a couple of Saturdays ago produced some of the loudest, scariest pressure cracks of the year and the ice was most definitely not "warming" with minus 33 to 35 degree static air temps. Mind you my physics marks were anything but record setting.

Washout, Thanks for the experiment to gain my physics diploma! Actually, your avatar would likely score higher than I would on anything physics related . Following up on your suggestion, would that be anything like leaving a two-four of beer cans in the trunk on a cold winter's night?? Or maybe having a cracked engine block or burst water pipes?? I raised the question originally because anything this basic being misinterpreted in an instructive offering creates some doubt in what little remains of my mind as to the overall validity of the article. Yep, I is severely bored!!
