$20 dollar adapter at bass pro us or on line very very very easy to refil 1 1b tanks over and over again, no worries, and 20 lb supply reg BBQ tank is only $9.oo to fill at costco, lots of online videos to show how to fill but super easy, put 1 ib in freeezer or outside in winte months, invert 20 lb and open valve till no mre sound, about 1min, shut main valve and remove 1lb er, done, a little spit on the valve or a good sniff to check if it leaks, voila 50 cents per 1lber

2 1lbers will last my big buddy heater on high or low high all day, not bad for a buck, and it really is as easy as it looks on youtube, bought my refill adapter at bass pro florida for 20 bucks but camping places sell them also in the usa and they are much lighter to haul andd smaller to carry, just my 2 cents.

we had a couple of 5 lb tank over the years but after 10 years these cant be refilled so i got the adapter to fill the 1lbs cans. i do not like to pull all the extra weight so two of these 3/4 filled 1lbs last me the entire day on ice, less clunky then the 5lbs tank, no hoses in the hut ect but both have merits.
If you go to any provincial park you can pick up like 20 of these 1lbs for free at the garbage areas, surprisingly i find 1 in 5 of these still have decent amount of propane in them.
IMO its safe; i have been doing this for years but use common sense do it outside no flames around, on stable surface ect.
a few tips i learned:
spray a little oil like seafoam on the Schroeder valve before each refill, this will prevent the 1lbs valve from sticking when you unscrew it form the adapter, this can also happen in extreme cold situations but a genital pull with needle nose will close the valve snugly if you hear any leaks.
to get a good refill the colder the empty tank and the warmer the 20lbs tank, i freeze the empty tanks and i put the 20lbs out in the sun for a few hours before i fill away, i used 6 or 7 of these this winter and it cost me next to nothing.
If you are not comfortable with any of this dont do it, nobody is forcing you, this is just my way of contributing what i have experienced for those looking for information to make the judgment if they choose to go this route. Be safe guys!
