Anyone out there ice fishing this week? I know with these warm weather, the ice thickness is probably a 3-4 inches I assume. Will want to head out wed, but would like some info on the ice condition if possible. Thanks

I have no trouble whatsoever in believing that the main lake ice, which was already compromised, would blow out in the winds we experienced this afternoon. The forecast for substantial snow starting tomorrow isn't good news either.

Hi,
We are heading out onto the ice at Simcoe by foot for the first time this weekend. Could anyone give us any tips on what ice is more safe to walk on? I listed a couple of questions below that hopefully someone would have the answers to.
We are new at this and have rented huts the last couple of times. This gets a bit pricey three weeks in a row though lol
- Is slush on the ice a bad sign? - I read black ice was thin, however we see people walking on ice that looks pretty dark, is there a difference?

Slush makes no difference if the ice under it is of good quality and thickness.
Black ice is the best ice.
For example...... 4" of black has roughly the same strength of 6-8" of white ice.
Where are you planning to walk out from? What are you fishing for?

A guide will cost you guys twice what a hut rental will.
Considering you have no ice knowledge, and this has been the worst ice year in many......it is probably advisable you stick with a hut rental again this year, and get all your gear and knowledge ready for next year.
Walking out on this ice right now without knowledge and proper safety equipment could be more costly than you can imagine.
If you're absolutely determined to go out on your own......follow the crowds. At least if something goes wrong, you'll have people to assist you or your group if need be.
Fwiw......You don't want to be on any less than 4" of black ice.
