Shopping at Costco, Loblaws, Whole Foods........ Do you find it impossible to find where the origin of fish, food, goods have come from?? Especially seafood.
Some help below on how to read Bar Codes.
ALWAYS READ THE LABELS ON THE FOODS YOU BUY--NO MATTER WHAT THE FRONT OF THE BOX OR PACKAGE SAYS, TURN IT OVER AND READ THE BACK---CAREFULLY!
With all the food and pet products now coming from China , it is best to make sure you read label at the grocery store and especially Wal-Mart when buying food products.
Many products no longer show where they were made, only give where the distributor is located.
It is important to read the bar code to track its origin.
How to read Bar Codes ....
This may be useful to know when grocery shopping, if it's a concern to you.
GREAT WAY TO "BUY USA & CANADA " AND NOT FROM CHINA!!
The whole world is concerned about China-made. Can you differentiate which one is made in Taiwan or China ?
If the first 3 digits of the barcode are 690 691 or 692, the product is MADE IN CHINA.
471 is Made in Taiwan
This is our right to know, but the government and related departments never educate the public, therefore we have to RESCUE ourselves.
Nowadays, Chinese businessmen know that consumers do not prefer products "MADE IN CHINA " so they don't show from which country it is made.
However, you may now refer to the barcode - remember if the first 3 digits are:
690-692 ... then it is MADE IN CHINA 00 - 09 ... USA & CANADA 30 - 37 FRANCE 40 - 44 GERMANY 471 ... Taiwan 49 ... JAPAN 50 ... UK
BUY USA & CANADIAN MADE by watching for "0" at the beginning of the number.
The last I heard was that only 2% of seafood coming into North America is inspected.

Do those numbers represent where it was processed or where it was caught? There was a W5 episode on how some fish is farmed/caught in other countries but because the fish was shipped and then processed in Canada it could say made in Canada.

I always avoid buying meat like fish or any kind of vegetables From China. I know most garlic that is sold in stores is grown in China and its nasty how it's grown. And there farm raised fish is gross. This is great info, thanks

If your looking for good fish and a variety check out Whole foods . They are a organic supermarket . The one I go to once in a while is at square one in Mississauga . I think there is one in Unionville also. They have a great selection of fish. Most of it is sourced in Canada.I got some whitefish fillets before Christmas , and they where the best I've had. They carry lake trout pickerel ,other kinds of trout , plus exotics that have been sourced right. One fish I want to try is Arctic Char. They have it right from the wild and very fresh. Maybe this weekend.make no mistake this place is not cheap. They do have sales on fish ,check there online flyer. The whole store is awesome . Check out the sandwich bar if you go , very good 👍👍👍

If you live in the Barrie area or frequent it, Johnny's Seafood market has great seafood/fish products and are very well informed about their products. You pay a little more, but the quality is worth it......and they usually has awesome garlic bulbs too.

Just designates where product originated. Many countries ship to other countries to have their product packaged. The problem is that the rules, laws are very different than what is in North America.
The fish are bred in less than quality water with quite a lot of runoff water pouring into these lakes. Sick fish are mixed in with the others.....
Crowded conditions in factories. Frozen product, staying frozen. Contamination, etc.
Your best deal is trusting your nose......
I agree, Whole Foods is a winner.
Maple Leafs Foods is a winner when it comes to meats being processed.
