Sturgeons, Are there Sturgeons in Simcoe?

Lets hope for the best, my bet is sturgeon. Got a glimpse of one drifting port d in spring of 2010, was in the boat, fought it for 20 min, just got a glimpse of the tail, then it broke my 5 lb leader, just swam around towing the boat, no runs, just constant weight.

Definitely not a carp or catfish. I seen those growing up and the body is not alike.

The only thing that might hv came close is if someone had taken a little pike, ruffed up his scales to stick outwards along both sides and tossed him back in lol.. but even then the colour does not match.

Unless you guys know of a really thin long looking catfish with bumpy sides and angular in shape?..

Just heard from my hut operator friend 3 weeks ago 3 guys in one of his huts reported watching a sturgeon swim by their camera.

More likely than not there are sturgeon in Simcoe.

We were in a hut too! Did he say where or what size the sturgeon was that they saw?

we it is connected to Georgian bay and Georgian bay has them.

I think there's a chance it could have been one it's a very big lake... Look how rare it's been hearing about walleyes being caught...

Years ago I hooked something monstrous off the 4th of innisfil. It just kept on going aND going and going until I ran out of line and it snapped my rod. Exactly what happened more than once before on the notty while carp fishing. No runs just weight that kept on moving. I've landed a few of them before and it behaved exactly like that. I told my friends who were looking at me in awe that it must have been a sturgeon. Couldnt explain anything else.

This is probably a stupid question but are you aloud to keep sturgeon anywhere in Ontario

I watched for about a good 45minutes at the niagara river a guy fighting a massive fish, he brought it close to shore and his buddy jumped in to try to grab it but there was just way too much tension and the line snapped. It was a river monster theres no doubt about that.It looked like he had tears in his eyes he was so upset, I was heartbroken and i was just a bystander lol.
Im sure there is some in Simcoe, its a massive lake. I carp fish pretty often in the summer time, and what you describe doesnt sound like a carp to me. Ive also had schools of carp swim under my hut multiple times on different occasions, and you can tell right away its a carp. Im sure theyre in there. Cmmon jeremy wade, simcoe time!

Yeah..id definitely shed a tear or two if I fought a fish that long just to hv it get away:/. Also I am positive it was not a carp I saw, I've caught those in the past. My guy was not a fleshy looking fish.

That's an awesome picture of a sturgeon, I'll mark Nipissing on the map for this summer. Let's hope someone has evidence of one in Simcoe this winter. My camera will be ready for Sunday!

bout 20 yrs ago my dad and his buddy were fishing off woodmans shoal using 30lb line on a jigging stick, he said when he set the hook on whatever it was, it was just solid weight, didn't get no pulls up on it, it just kept swimming and pulling his arms towards the hole until the line snapped. it could have been a REALLY big laker, but i have no doubt theres sturgeon on simcoe, its a big lake and definitely a posibilty of a few being in there.
