what fillet knife should I get?

Bubba Blades all the way! They are very well designed, have incredible flex for their thickness, and are sharp enough to make any fish cut like butter. The grip is bar none the best on the market.

I had to order mine from the US, but happy to see that the local BPS got smart and started stocking them.

If they are good enough for offshore types, they are plenty good for freshwater peeps!

I have a Helle Steinbit for fillet. If its anything like my Helle 4" fixed blade, the thing stays sharp for a long time and very well made. Not exactly the cheapest things but the blades are damn good and they are sharp and stay sharp.

Traditionally we've (well NOT WE, lol, my guy -- "I'se the B'y who catches the fish and HE's the one who "cleans 'er") used the wooden handled Rapala style. We've recently purchased an electric one, Rapala Deluxe Electric Fillet Knife, and will be doing an "unboxing" on our channel within the next week or so. They were on I think for 40% off, regularly $99 Not sure when we'll actually get to use the fippin' thing -- we've been skunked the last couple trips out!!

my wife got me a cutco fillet knife a few years ago, these are pricey but she knows i prefer quality vs cheap disposable anything, lots of cheaper options available but there is a world of higher end fillet knives you dont see at the big box stores avaible.

I got a Shimano knife at Dollarama for $4---seems to work fine.

Just so no one is confused Cutco is not a high end knife, its a pyramid scheme operation (vector marketing) with low-mid quality stuff. My wife was involved with them in university...they make you buy your own set so you can do your sales pitch to your family.
(commission sales and salespeople cover all costs...great business model for them, every hire is at least 1 sale!!)

no way..lol i just took her word for it since it was a gift and i recall she purchased it off a coworker, i am a Henkel guy myself but its not a bad knife I've used it for a couple of seasons and no issues seems to holds its edge but that good to know i will let her know tonight and try not to laugh at her since it was a gift...lol

Not so much what kind of knife, but learn to to make and keep them sharp.

I have a fillet knife problem so to speak. I own about a dozen and have 5 sharpening systems/stones. My only thing is I can never get the tip and the 2 inches or so of the blade from the tip sharp enough. Rest of the blade is great but not that part. Any tips to sharpen tips??

But they still perform very well. Can do a salmon 20# in 30 seconds ribcage in or out

Does anyone uses the Skinzit Electric Fish Skinner? Does it work?

It's $195.00 + tax on Amazon and my wife wanted to buy it for me as I'm not the biggest fan of cleaning fish and she wouldn't even touch them...

No doubt Cutco has a interesting business plan but their knives and scissors are good. They have been around forever it seem as my fathers uncle worked for them like 60 years ago. My father had a fillet knife from 60 years back from his uncle and they sharpened it for free. One of our Cutco knives was replaced for free as it could not be sharpened.

That being said I would not buy a Cutco knife to fillet fish. To stiff.

I talkied to a guy in PA that professionally cleans hundreds of fish per day at a place called Poor Richards. Not including a custom made knife he said the Bubba Blade is the best comericial blade he has ever used. This business goes through knives like toilet paper and I have been going to them for to many years. I take their word to be extremely reliable and truly would buy a Bubba Blade for my next fillet knife.

I'm interested in finding out if anyone has used this as well. Looks interesting but pricey. If it does what it says, might be worth it.

You can get a longer Rapala. Butcher's steel is nice if you keep on the right angle. I use the sharper that comes with the knife. Then run it back words over a honing stone to knock the barbs off. Works for me.
