I drove over the hwy 12 bridge yesterday and the water on both sides of the Atherly Narrows was wide open with rolling waves. I couldn't see the conditions very well at Tudhope Bay because of the blowing snow, but it looked to me like the snow was gathering on the water so there still must be some ice. It's close to the Narrows though, so I would be cautious.
I don't know the area that well, but I'm guessing there's current going through the Narrows and that's why it was open. Tudhope is a sheltered area a couple kilometers to the West so it might be unaffected. I don't know for sure. I'd give the guys at Trombley's Tackle a call before you go, their shop is right there and I bet they'll know.
On a related topic does anyone know if the opening at the Narrows has affected the ice further up on that side of Couch, in the casino area?

There has been open water under the bridge at the narrows all winter long. It doesnt affect the ice out of Tud Hope. I was there on friday and had nearly 12 inches of ice.

Not true, I've been crossing the bridge all season and yesterday was the first time I saw open water.

How far out does that 12 inches go??
I heard that by the time you get out to Four Mile Pt. or Moons Beach the ice is not safe.
Is this true??

That's Simcoe not cooch.
We got a pile of snow overnite 16-17".The lakes are covered so unsafe areas are gonna be covered too. Can't help with the thickness at Tudhope.
The narrows has had open water out to the small islands on the cooch side for a while.

Tudhope has 7" out for about 1/2 kil. The ice is solid. However, fishing has been poor. Keep thinking the perch will move in but so far has not happened ( at least not based on my time out there)

I got out to Couchiching again yesterday ( South East side) and there's still over a foot of ice near Ojibway Bay marina. It's covered by 1 - 2 feet of snow however, so walking is a real workout. The fishing was ok, but not great. By the time I was driving home in the evening the Narrows was nearly closed again, no worries about safe ice...but bring snow shoes.
