Hi Folks:
This is an update to my post on March 4th - basically the conditions are the same. There is a lot snow on top of the lake - its deep (up to 2 feet in drifts which are everywhere). In addition, in some areas there are several inches of slush where the layer of snow has started to melt.
In general - travel is difficult in this area - unless you have a ski doo. ATV's are having trouble getting stuck in the deep snow - trust me I have been stuck two days in a row. Anyone walking is in for a good work out especially if you are pulling a fully loaded sleigh.
Chongo advised me that he travelled around the S.W. point of Snake Island on his ski doo towards Fox Island and he found 9 inches of ice but he stayed away from the pressure cracks and pressure ridges. I would suggest caution if anyone plans to head out in this area due to the problems with open water and the possibly of changes in the lake/ice conditions at this time of year as the temperature warms up not to mention if its windy.
In addition, I spoke to several people who had been out fishing and the bite was not great on Saturday - late in the afternoon the perch started to bite but for the most part people were catching dinks.
