This snow can't be good!, How does this effect our season?

It can't be that good but interested in what you members have to say...

I'm not as experienced as others on this forum, but from my understanding, a little snow is OK, but lots of snow on first ice can lead to sketchy ice. I'm still learning the whole science behind ice formation. I find it really interesting to be honest. How air temps/water temps/wind speed/and other factors all play a part.

I'd love to hear what others have to say as well

Snow is bad news early in the season, it insulates the ice and makes it form much much slower. Be very careful out there!

Its good news if there is no ice yet, bad news if snow is sitting on top of ice.

Its BAD news it acts as an insulator preventing the fridgid cold from penetrating.This will delay ice formation unfortunately.

This will slow things down a bit on lakes that were already forming ice. This will just help cool down the bigger lakes.

If the snow is falling on open water it would be a good thing, IMO.

We only had a couple of nights of real cold temps to start the freeze over, then -- WHAMMO! SNOW galore. A little better than last year, only because the overnight temps were -16ish before the big dump here in Orillia; however, two feet of snow insulating an inch of ice is not good. Geez, last year was a horrible ice season. Hope this isn't a repeat!

I actually hope it's going to be as "bad" as last year. First time on the ice was before Christmas and we iced fished until April.

Lets look at the bright side , the snow should help the laker grounds freeze up sooner. Hopefully we all get a chance to get out on the main basin this season.

Im under the belief that the snow hinders ice development but can also insulate for those warmer spells, but ONLY if there is a layer of ice on the water. otherwise the snow melts in the water haha.
