Jan 3 rd Nip fishing Report

Nip was reluctant as usual for mid season. 32 FOW 28" of ice around our hut. 3 walleye 1 Herring 1 Smelt 30 to 40 perch 3" to 9 ", You were right longshank UL and small was best.

Marked fish all weekend lots of bait fish, All 3 walleye's picked from the bottom and they wanted nothing to do with shiners over 3" long. Small was the best bite and damn was it a lite bite.

Pic's where all in the keeper range 16, 15.5 and 14.5. And you defiantly had to work for them. All pic where eaten with joy. Herring Smelt and Perch where released unharmed to live another day. Took 75 perch filets with me from Simcoe for lunch Friday. So we had fish all 3 days for lunch and breakfast. My camera was on the fritz so pictures to follow when the guy's wake up and send them to me.

Ice was good every where we went 25" plus drove all over the bay north of Nipissing.

you mean that due to the slot size restriction, the 16" was released uneaten?

As I read the slot restrictions for Sec 11 it is none between 16.9- 23.6 so it was .9 under the slot. So the 16" went in the fry pan also, Check the reg's before you jump in please.

It must have been an honest mistake. If you were fishing Lake Nipissing that 16" was in the slot size. You must have forgotten to read the exceptions in the reg book, which states that in Nipissing the slot size is 40-60 cm, not 43-60. Glad you had a good time.

nippissing has its own slot from other lakes so the 16 was in the slot! glad you guys had fun and got a feed of walleye! i fish up there a lot in the summer and your one 16 inch fish doesnt even come close to a 800 yard gil net! cheers!

That slot up there is deceptive..I'm sure you would'nt have kept it. r just thump it on the floor once.all good

It didn't fall into the red zone on the tape. So I guess the guys just called it 16" to the closest inch. Everything we caught(only had 3) was measured against the slot tape on the wall. So if not in the red was good to go. So dam maybe my 15.5 was the derby winner and the guy's just beat me out of $60.00. Next year I will have to put 1 guy in charge of measurements. Maybe mine was 15 5/8's not a 1/2.

You are right Longshank they are confusing as all get out reread them again this afternoon. Why not just say all of lake Nipissing instead of here to here and this rive or that highway. Just say Lake Nipissing is 15.7" and done.

I am sure the fish was below the slot, just a fishermans tall tale made it bigger then it actually was.

You're right nipfisher. Fishermen never lie, they just stretch the truth somewhat.

I guess we will have to have legal counsel to interprit the regs. Man life used to be easier

I try to return them, but when they are gut hooked and (rare, but still happens) already bleeding they stay on the ice and I take my chances that the CO will be reasonable. So far, so good.
