A young bull moose that went through the ice on the West Arm area of Lake Nipissing near Monetville and was rescued early Saturday afternoon did not make it through the night.
According to Greater Sudbury resident Randy Moratz who was involved in the rescue, several groups of men ice fishing saw the moose start to cross the West Arm Narrows between Lavigne and north Monetville about 1:30 p.m.
"As the moose got closer, it stopped," said Moratz. "A moment later it fell through. The fishermen went over to check on it and several motorists on nearby Highway 64 stopped also. Soon, several snowmobiles and ATVs also stopped."
Moratz said telephone calls were made and several ropes and a kayak were brought to the site. One man even pushed himself out on the ice in the kayak until he was close enough to drop a noose over the moose's antlers.
"By this time, over 20 people were involved," said Moratz. "They tried to pull the moose out, but the ice break under his weight. On the fourth attempt, they were finally able to pull him out and drag him to safer ice."
Moratz said the moose had been in the frigid water for about an hour, was quite stressed and looking hypothermic, and was unable to stand up.
After about half an hour, the animal was showing signs of recovery so everyone left. The moose's only safe exit was where the people were standing, so they cleared out to prevent him from being spooked and going back toward the thin ice."
Moratz said when area residents checked on the moose Sunday morning, they discovered he had died.
