Long weekend on Katch

Had the chance to go to a friend's cottage on Katch for the long weekend and brought the boat up with me. Had a great weekend (couldn't have asked for better weather). Unfortunately back issues limited the type of fishing I could do and how long I could do it, but I still got out some and was able to catch a few decent bass and a bunch of smaller bass and panfish, and my wife was able to introduce a bunch of kids to fishing which was fun to watch.

Saw some monster bass (and a great sized jumbo perch) while putting around (man that lake is clear), but never got one of them on my line.

One odd/disturbing thing I witnessed was a fellow fisherman on a pontoon boat who hooked into a good fish. Watched him fight it and ultimately land a musky (I would guess 30" or so, definitely under 40"). The disturbing part was as soon as he netted the fish and had it in the boat he immediately ran to his console, started the boat and blasted back to his cottage without releasing the fish. Even if he was rushing back to get proper tools to remove his hooks, I can't help but think that being out of the water that long couldn't be good for the fish and it would have been better to cut the line and release.

Hopefully all was right in the end and it was released safely to fight another day.

Thanks for the report. I highly doubt that muskie made it back into the water. Doesn't make sense to go get tools to remove a hook on a 30 degree day. Cut the line and release. Probably bellow legal size as well to keep. I hope I am wrong! Hope your kids had a blast.

He probably took it back to show people at the cottage.
If thats the case Someone needs to tell him that that's what cameras are for.

My guess would be Katchewanooka Lake. It's East of Chemong.

Sounds like Lake Katchewanooka,just north of Peterboro. I was at a buddies cottage on that lake about 3 weeks ago,got into some bucket mouths. He regularly catches Muskies on his patch. Take the locks into Stony Lake from there.

Katchwanoka lake I believe. Town of Lakefield. It's basically a extension of the Trent river leading to lovesick lake and then clear / Stoney lake. Great musky and largemouth / smallie fishing. I won a clubby there in 2007 with over 19lbs. We had 3 smallies and 2 big largies both pushing 6 lbs each. It's worth trying out !!

it's good to know all of these little lakes like this as eventually the gold bass will have to end up in smaller lakes like this as it's not in the same lake twice.

Was an interesting lake to fish. I kept catching smallmouths on prime largemouth territory and largemouths on prime smallmouth territory.

Im not 100% sure if it is consistent across the province but the kawartha legal size is 45" that was definitely an illegal catch if you are estimating under 40". that really hurts to hear about... but unfortunately it happens all the time... good thing most fisherman abide by the rules or the fish populations in general would suck... let alone just muskie. even if he did go back to grab tools to remove the hook, that fish was definitely not released alive... I would have followed him back to shore and reported the cottage/house to the MNRF...

Great report and sounds like you guys all had a blast. love hearing that story of introducing fishing to the young ones. will be me when im a father!
