Rented a cottage last week on a small lake in the Minden area.
When fishing off the dock noticed that some weeds I had snagged had a gelitan like clear slime encasing the stalk.
Anyone seen this before, know what causes it and if it is harmful to the lake.
No algea in the lake, it is 60 ft deep for a small lake and very healthy small bass population.

It was not isolated to one spot but found this throughout the lake.

Few other photo's:

It was mentioned on another forum that they are Fresh Water Jellyfish.

After doing some research fresh water Jellyfish are refered to as "Craspedacusta Sowerbyi."
I dont think what you see in the photo are fresh water jellyfish. This is almost like an algae that has compassed some of the weed structure.

They do seem to be common in Ontario, but are creature that are like salt water Jellyfish.

I don't know what they are either but have to say they are always nasty when taking them off of your lure.

I personally believe that they are a defence mechanism of the plant it self. to keep things from eating them as I only ever see that exact type of pad you show there with it on them.
And in saying that I usually find that type of lilly pad in our more northern lakes.

This is where we need tuna back though to verify lol.

I agree with Fork. I see that all the time in august and September on pigeon. I do know it is nothing to worry about. If Im gill/crappie fishing with family, I sometimes fling the gobs of slime at them. their reactions are priceless because they never know what hit them because they cant see it haha.

I usually see it on lilypads or the tall reeds that stick out of the water several feet high duck hunters like to hide in. especially on the stems. quite often there are little brown specs in them, almost looks like eggs or seeds of some sort.

feels disgusting but nothing harmful to touch. wont say I will try a mouthful anytime soon haha

Man if someone flung that at me I'd think it was a snot rocket hitting me haha. Your family is quite understanding. If I did that to my brother there would be hell on board and we'd both end up in the drink.

Leopard frog eggs. They lay them in a jelly type substance and attach them to weeds.

I've seen the little clumps of frog eggs on weeds with the black dots in em.
But this slime is slightly different.

Just as nasty to hold though lol

They're frog eggs at the early stage. The slime becomes thinner as they progress. Just don't taste it. Verrrrry bitter.

I thought they might be frog eggs at first but ones I have seen in the past looked very different.
There were quite a few frog on the lake and some massive bull frogs.
The stellar top water fishing spoke to that.
Other then punching weeds all I used was top water Live Target Frog, Sunfish and my Ba-Donk-a-Donk Walking Lure.
