Head Lake (Norland)

Why can I never find any information on this lake? I've found what species are in it, but that is about it. Can't find a single resource showing the depths, geography or fishing areas in the lake. I've fished it once and there were nasty rocky shoals all over the place. Great for fishing but not so great for the bottom end of your boat motor. I was in a little tinny then, but I think i would be afraid to bring my bigger boat in there, not knowing when I'm in a dangerous spot. Bummer because it seems like there are some decent fish in there...

Any advice.

I have a backwoods fishing map book and has head lake in it. I've always wanted to go but read about the rocks all over. I believe there was a post last year from someone who was up there. I got my book from Canadian tire and it's great. Gives depths and locations to fish and stay away from. Same company that makes the back roads map books. Don't know if they still publish them. I usually fish by myself so going to a lake like that alone is out my comfort zone but heard it's worth it. Good luck

Awesome Smallies, deadly rocks but have noit been in a long time so I don't know what the water levels are like. If i went I would just take it slow with the motor raised and use my trolling motor when ever I could

I've never fished it before. But I do have one of those map books. Here is a copy of head lake. It's not the best.

Thanks for sharing the content of the map book; hard to imagine that we used to rely on books with the technology that is available today, isn't it?

Some nice pike in there as well. Just watch out for the duck hunters as well this time of year. Good luck!

I have been fishing head lake for close to 20 years and have never caught a Pike.

You are tight about the rocks, they are all over the lake.

I've fished it for a lot of years an have never seen a pike in there yet. It's a lake that is really hard on the lower units of motors. Notices this season that very few of the marker bouys are no longer there.

My mistake on the pike. My friend fishes it frequently and goes on about the huge pike that he's never able to bring in. I am guessing he is talking about musky. In our language we don't have a word for musky, just call them pike. I translated wrong.

Thanks for the responses. Seems like I was on the right track about it being a deadly lake for shoals and rocks as many of you came back with that exact reply.

Special thanks to Scro for the map. I would be a little more confident to head (no pun intended) in there now. As I can see where I could go faster for a while until I get into the danger zones and switch to electric.

Maybe some late fall musky action is to come...

I got some smallish bass on there this summer and had a nice walleye follow a crank bait back to the boat.i was worried about the rocks so I just went slowwhere ever I went. I watched where the other boat were driving full tilt and followed behind them when I wanted to move fast. Go slow and fish as you move and you should be ok.

Fished it since 85 seen that lake change over the years but the rocks are still there nasty launch but decent fishing . Definitely no pike over the years caught bass perch muskie walleye sunfish catfish sucker .and sea gulls.

I have fished Head lake lake for the last 20 years, as a cottage owner there i have noticed a huge decline in all species of fish with walleye being the hardest hit. We (cottage owners) have had a increased lost water issue of the past 2 years thanks to some #@#$%# individuals who have taken upon them selves to destroy the dam , which regulated water levels, hence the increased issue of boat and motor damage.Hope the people responsible are caught and remember KARMA is just around the corner for you!!!!!!!!!!.Aswell the MNR have been in the area and on the lake 10 fold with the help of cottagers like myself allowing them to access the lake at any time .BEAWARE.

Haven't fished it in awhile but it was memorable. I motored out fairly quickly then noticed the numerous rock shoals everywhere. It was like navigating a minefield trying to get back. I did have one very large fish which broke me off. Scary lake, you really need to know the underwater hazards.
