This morning and buddy and I headed up to the kawarthas to try our hand at muskie fishing.
I have never fished for muskie before and I didn't even know what gear to use. Thanks to some board members giving me some decent pointers and tips as well as some gear suggestions. I was able to get a decent set up rod/reel and line for around 120 bucks. Nothing fancy just enough to get the job done.
We got to the launch just around 8 and after getting ready we were on our way. I got my titanium leader tied on and decided to try a 8 inch Jake pike. We were in a channel so it was a little weedy. We were trolling and I was picking up a few weeds here and there. We'd been out about 20 minutes when my fishing buddy does a hook set and then says "weeds!" So I wasn't surprised when I got snagged as well, or so I thought. I tried to pull my line free but it didn't even budge. After a head shake I knew I was hooked up.
The fish was heavy. The heaviest fish I've ever had on. The whole fight only lasted a couple minutes. Once it was close to the boat we got our confirmation on what we had both suspected. A muskie! Once it saw the boat it peeled a little more line but before long we had it in the boat. We didn't weigh or measure it since we didn't want to stress it out anymore than we had to since we had a little trouble getting the hook out.
After a couple quick photos it was back in the water. Took a couple minutes to revive before it left my hand with a powerful tail whip.
It was cold and windy but it was well worth it to land such a beauty fish!

RCRward,
You occasionally tend to sell yourself short. Don't. Clearly you are more than capable. You geared up properly, did your thing and got your first. Congratulations!!!!!!! I share your happiness and success!!
Now that you have beat the term "fish of 10,000 casts" what's next for you?
Again, congratulations and we look forward to reading stories of more good fishing days from you.
