Thanks everyone!

My next big goal is to catch a great big laker through the ice. I have caught smaller ones before but no big ones.

I should be able to get out a lot this year if the ice is good.

You forgot to mention the best part of the story! That musky your holding tried to take a piece of your captain with him when he was unhooking him!

Damn thing clamped down on my thumb and got me good. Thank god he didn't do a head shake and he let go pretty quickly or it could have ended our trip pretty early with a hospital visit. As it is he got my thumb right down to the bone, fatty tissue and all. still kept on driving the boat and dragging musky baits with one hand while I wrapped my glove around my thumb to stop the bleeding. In 30mph winds. (had to walk to school through 3 feet of snow uphill both ways to boot)

Rod holders are a must for me next time!

I almost lost a thumb this bass opener in the Kawarthas to a damn pike. Chomped and thrashed. Always keep crazy glue on board. Got a good scar out of it and when I stretch my thumb out I still feel it.

I fished my whole life and that was the first time I've ever been bit. I think I was just pumped with adrenaline when I saw this big guy and got careless. Was really trying to hold it properly and get the hook out real quick. One misplaced thumb was all it took. Live and learn I guess. Crazy glue would have been a good idea. Like I said I got off lucky that he did not thrash at all. Could have been a lot worse!! I got off with a puncture wound quite a bit of swelling and a bit of bruising. So far no infection, but I hear it could take a few days to set in so I'm just watching and waiting. I dunked it in my whiskey bottle and sucked the poison out right away so I should be good But in all seriousness I washed it out in rubbing alcohol and put an antibiotic ointment on it when I got home. hoping to avoid a doctor visit. I'll let you all know if it turns black and falls off in the next week or so.

I soaked mine in iodine. Burned like hell but never got infected. Not sure about musky but I know pike have bacteria in their saliva to numb the pain and reduce blood clotting. Also causes infection. Hope you keep your thumb!
