A good idea by Tuna, and even better do you have one of those underwater cameras?

OR you can borrow one from someone, even if you have to spend 2 hours looking for it using the camera, I think it's worth it. Once you find it with the camera, use a net or some kind of retrieval gadget / tool to get it out. Better than getting wet and at least you can say you tried..

Of course if the water is murky that will complicate recovery.

Try to get a wet suit which will allow you all the time you need..

Picked up a wet suite at sail on way home yesterday. Apparently it is still going to get cold but should help. I am very skeptical about trying a net as I do not want to bury the phone into the mud. And as for a camera they're calling for 50km gusts I think I would need it perfectly calm and sunny out for this to work best.

YouTube has videos of successful netting of camera in 20 ft of water.

Borrow an underwater fishing camera from somebody, if you can find your phone with the camera then netting it should be really easy, and much less cold.

Those damned Navy divers....they're a rare breed.

Matt, you can't rent scuba gear without being a certified diver. They would possibly rent a wet suite and snorkel diving gear. One of the prime rules I was taught when I became a certified diver was NEVER DIVE ALONE. And for good reason too. I have never or would I ever dive alone.

If you look to hire a diver, you will pay for two of them for the rule above. Sorry I couldn't give you better news, but it is what it is.

The net idea and camera idea sounds good. What about a water proof case for the GoPro on a painters pole? Locate it. Then a net on the painters pole? Good luck? Remember if you can't swim, sink as fast as you can and run like hell!

I hope they sold you a weight belt too. Otherwise you'll NEVER submerge. They are super buoyant.

You'll only be chilled for a minute or so till your body heat warms the water that fills the wet suite.

I tried magnets earlier today on 7 phones and they were encased in plastic and wouldn't hold on at all. Maybe yours is different.

I was in the water last week in my swimming trunks getting the boat on a trailer and it's freaking cold. Legs were numb in about 3 minutes

Tuna's advice is solid and wise,I'd be going with that one for sure!
