Building a hut for the first time.

2x6 upright giving it 6 inches clearance when towing. I mean when blocking it 8 inches up the runners will only be 2 inches above surface.

As for using OSB, it's sort of what I'm stuck with budget wise, I'm already looking at 300, using Normal plywood would put me way above budget. We plan on painting and waterproofing the outside, along with the floor. We will be using a wood stove so no moister the propane ones give off. Hopefully this will be enough.

i had the same thought about painting the OSB, i put about 3 gallons of paint on it and it still swelled. if its all thats in your budget it will work for the season maybe 2 but plan on replacing it with something else in the next couple years.

like i said i used it last year cause i was under the same budget crunch and it lasted me the year and i learned alot but this year ive got with aluminum, whatever way you build it you will thoroughly enjoy your time in it thats for sure

Just make sure you paint the osb board with a latex or oil based paint and it'll seal it up good

how were you going to mount the skis on the hut?a hut that size im not sure one 2x6 would be enough,that hut will be very heavy

There will be 2, one on each side, 2 feet in on both sides, at least that's the plan unless someone has any better ideas

There is a paint they sell at Carpet One and Home Hardware call SuperDeck that is designed for filling in cracked wood and sealing docks. It's about $70 a gallon, it works well and has a texture to it so it's not slippery.

The stuff they sell at Home Depot, Lowe's and Rona that's for doing the same job is crap. It was base tested in Florida and peels off with Ontario's cold temps.

I put parabolic skiis on my hut, which is a lot smaller, but downhill skii facing both ways my be a good thing for you and you can get them for dirt cheap at places like ReStore and the likes.

i dont think thats a good idea,i would seriously consider 12' 2x10's doubled(thats 4)with the 2x4 notched into them,they will be part of the the hut floor frame,with a foot out the back of the hut and a foot out the front..

like the pic i attached,yes it adds weight,but its very important to have that strenght,a single 2x whatever will not take the weight for long....you can lose weight in other places....i cant stress the importance of this enough...ive built dozens of big huts

an 8x10' hut weighs hundreds of pounds!

or like this with solid 8'x8' posts with good boltscounter sunk through the bottom of the runners up through the floor,but the floor will have to be reinforcrd where the bolts come up through the hut floor

or no skis and use a seperate sleigh,but you have to load/unload the hut every move.....i do have a big strong metal sleigh you could have if you wanted to go that route

I think having your runners 2' offset from the outside walls is too much. If ever your shack's runners got frozen in ice you wouldn't be able to chip them out. The offset shown in the picture from the previous post looks to be about right.

What would I be looking at price wise for your sleight? Highschool kids on a budget lol. As for offset, more like a 1 foot offset seems to be whats in the photos. If I go skis Ill definitely look at 4 2x10s like you said (2 sets doubled) but that does add a lot of extra cost. I also then need 12 inch blocks to block it, and I don't think that a buncha screwed together 2x4 pieces is going to cut it at that height. What would you suggest to block it? As for ice thickness I know its been said prior 8 inches, would you agree? First permanent hut, Don't want to go on anything sketchy. What about raising it every week, Iif for some reason I cant get up one weekend would it be okay to let it sit for 2 weeks or do I really need to get up and raise it (Say early morning before my military coop) where I wouldn't have time to fish just raise it. Sorry for all questions, just new to it and want to be well informed before putting both my time and money into it
Edit 1: Also, if I where to go a sleight option, how would I block it? With skis me and a buddy could get a grip and lift it the 2-3 inches, with it being flush on the ground I can see that being a problem.

Wow that's awesome man, would totally be interested, just looked up the price of 2x10x12, 80$ more onto the project lol, shiver. Now how would you get the hut blocked up once you've slide it off the sleight?

7-8" is fine.....with an 8x10 hut weekly would be best to gaurantee no freeze ins...

where are you putting it out?

when off loading from sleigh,push the hut so it tilts(half on sleigh,half on ice)put the blocks down where the corners will fall off the sleigh when pulling the sleigh away,half blocked now and you can get a bar under to get the other 2 blocks set under the other end of the hut.....easy peasy
