RCCL, for some areas, it depends on current and size of lakes. but if it is a lower current lake, usually, I believe most would agree, 3-4 inches of black ice is good enough for foot walking. I usually wait till people are reporting at least 7 inches to be as sure as I can be. just like everyone is saying, be safe and spud your way out or punch holes with your auger every so often so you have a running tally of ice thickness. (I usually drill holes every 10-20 ft away from where people walk) and I always bring sticks or branches to stick in or near the hole to mark them so people don't step through. again, many have spud bars to make sure of this, but if there is a snow dumping, you may not see them before it is too late. my family gets a real tree every xmas, so I usually just chop a few branches off of it

Ice is roughly 8" anywhere I have checked. Shore lines were a little soft this morning. Remember that the Causeway is a fish sanctuary within 100m, as well as Gannon's narrows. Good luck all, wishing I was fishing!

Took a drive down the bottom end of Chemong this afternoon. 4-5 permanent huts out already and another gentleman was bringing his out. Spoke with him and he said couldnt find less than 6.5 inches anywhere. Mostly 8 inches. Gonna try my luck tomorrow with my portable. Will let you all know how it goes.

smitt, were u fishing in gifford bay? there were a couple guys out in front of my house. one guy appeared to be catching a lot more than his buddy. and it looked like a couple good size fish went back down the hole, so i assumed there were some bass cruising.

Had some luck on Chemong today. Beauty day, sunny and 2-3 degrees. 7" of ice. 5 black 2 white. About 10 perch, 5 walleye, which of course went back, but decent sizes though, 15"+. And a couple of bass that also went back. Half a dozen permanent huts, with quite a bit of traffic throughout the day. Great first day out. Looking forward to the next.

Was out on Chemong yesterday morning, ice seemed fine, haven't heard any word about it today yet, when I went out tonnes of perch action, an accidental walleye obviously back down the whole. No bluegill at all over a couple days which was a little odd. One of the I caught was about the length of my fillet knife, didn't know Chemong had perch that large.
Hopefully its a trend to be continued this season.

I was out yesterday morning for a couple hrs LOTS of blue gill several bass all back down the hole, rain today will make it real sloppy out there but with cold coming back should be good to go in couple days.

Hello! I have the itch to go out tomorrow on Chemong lake but i am not familiar with the area. Would anyone know a good spot to park and walkout. Can anyone suggest a decent spot that would generally freeze first?
Can anyone give me a ice update? I do not know how much rain you got these last few days.
Tomorrow is my only day off for 8 days so i am driving a hour north just for a chance at safe ice!

I walked out in front of my house this afternoon with my girls. Setup the hut cause the wind was blowing. Got my 6 year old setup and she lands a perch before I get my 4 year old going. Always sets the mood. It was just a little 6" but she was jacked. 4 year old gets going and she lands a perch 9". So we kept it. Then the wind really started howling. Hut moved with all 3 of us in it. So took it down and fished outside for another 45. I finally landed and small perch and the 6 yr old got cold. So she walked in. 4 yr old is my fishing partner so she roughed it with me and landed a beauty sunfish. Then she called it. All in all good little afternoon.
