I have a lowrance elite x4 and an old hummingbird 141c and i like the humminbird better, faster scroll speed, better noise reduction and sensitivity adjustments to get the screen dialed in.

Sail has the Piranhamax 197C PT SONAR on for 219 looks like a decent little unit for the price. ive also checked our the Marcum showdown 5.6 used it last winter and was amazing just too expensive right now to purchase

I have the Lowrance 4X. There are better ones out there for a lot more money and worse ones foe the same price.... To me it's the best one I've used for under $500. I use mostly for lakers in 90-110 for with good results. For a first time unit, hands down to me you won't go wrong but you may find that you won't need anything else ever.

If you can find an lowrance x67c they are great for beginners. I have tried alot of a lot them although have not tried the garmin and always go back to it. They do not make them any more. So kijij is the way to go. Every time one pops up on kijiji I buy it. If i can get it for 200 or better.

Yep still have one of those.bullet proof unit.
Have "upgraded" since then tho. I like my elite 4 except for the multiple functions you need to do to set it up

go with an garmin 45 echomap chirp.......great unit, after going with garmin id never use another brand
I just used My new Garmin Echo 45dv Chirp yesterday and all I can say is I love it so much. Flasher mode for my 45Chirp is very close to my Marcum LX9 that I used to have and I like my Marcum LX9 so much but it was way to heavy. For my Echo 45DV Chirp- I use the regular Chirp ducer and as long as you made it horizontal under the ice and it will be fine. Hope this help!
