It is very important go have a flasher or a graph type finder with you when you ice fish especially when your mobile. You don't want to be in a spot all day and not catch fish like in a stationary hut. If your marking fish you stay, when it goes dead or no activity you pack up and move and hunter for fish..... Like the commercial says "Never leave home with out it".......

I wasn't sold on the deeper...seems more inconvenient and not quite as good as a real machine...I had a cheap garmin echo I was using and now have the elite 3 ...waiting on my 4 upgrade to come. My garmin had was faster scrolling than the 3 ...hopefully the 4 is a bit better.

Try your unit first then decide......really all you need to know is if you have any activity under you anywhere in the column.........your unit isn't great but it will work (depending on your phone) plus you'll appreciate an expensive one down the road.....or not.

just bought the Garmin echo 301c portable today, looks like a pretty decent little unit, first fish finder I bought, mainly for ice fishing, price was right hopefully its a decent little unit, haven't read any complaints on it yet

I went from a flasher to a GPS/lcd graph with a flasher mode. Turns out that I hardly ever use the flasher mode. I also use the unit on our tin boat at the family cottage in the summer. I'd look for a portable colour LCD unit, and get an ice transducer for it. Then your covered for summer and winter. I would never go back to a flasher unit, I've found the small LCD's to be just as good, if not better as you can look away from the screen for a minute and still see a mark that came on the screen when you where distracted!

When fishing out in the open up North I like being able to glance about at the scenery and sneak a peek at what others are doing rather than staring at a flasher.

My elite 4x has both options I prefer the sonar over the flasher function. I used the elite 4x settings that are on this site and it works great for 15-120ft range.

Where are the settings help your talking about. I wouldn't mind going over these instructions . I got a elite 4x chirp last summer and im converting it for the ice season.
