Just went to check ice thickness on Chemong. We have over 2 inches of solid black ice !!

We didn't walk out very far though. Lake appears to be freezing nicely. With temps well below freezing all this week I'm thinking possibly next weekend we might be able to walk out to a couple spots that I'm very familiar with.

unfortunately this big dump of snow will slow things down. be careful keep in mind that ice forms at shore first so 3-4inches there does mean its the same over deep water. lets all have a safe and enjoyable christmas

Safe is the key word.

With all the luck I've been having I'm waiting until there's at least a foot lol.

Thanks for the updates, man it seems like just yesterday I was catching bass in a t shirt

Where abouts did you measure the 2 inches of black ice? Going to have some people go out this weekend for sure. I don't think its all that ready yet. Going to tap into a couple ponds this weekend though

It was south chemong down by Fife Bay, just off shore over a few feet of water. We have had a good dump of snow now and more coming tonight. Possible rain tomorrow, so likely will stall things a little. I have hopes of being out over Xmas holidays.

Due to the short season last year I sure hope we can get out over Christmas!

Drove down the causeway a few times today while moving my old man into his new house and saw a few sled tracks on the lake near the shore. I didn't go on the ice but it didn't look safe to be standing on. Lots of soft spots. There is almost a foot of snow on it right now also.

Yeah, I wouldn't advise going out yet. Fished spots on both sides of the lake and max ice depth was about 4 inches. Lots of 2-2 1/2. Some spots I would say less than that as well. Had my safety gear, only reason me and buddy went out. Won't be going out again until after new year with this warmer weather coming.

Looks like no days colder than -5 for the next 14 days according to the weather network and 6 days above zero not good news for the ice

Hi , guys I've had lots of luck in the past on chemong just using minnows....but I'm going to try to get away from live bait this year ... I was going to try a 1/8 jigging spoon tipped with a Berkley power wiggle do u guys think that will work just as well?

Thanks,
Mcgregor

Better to have rattle spoon, it will bring more fish to you.

I almost exclusively use those baits. I do keep a rattle spoon or clacking rap and use it to "call" fish and then switch to the smaller baits when fishing pan fish and perch. Usually have pretty good success.
