Lake Simcoe Ice, Gonna be a good weekend

Got out on Simcoe for the first time yesterday. Used the spud most of the way out but found it to be almost 10 inches. The top two or three inches were just starting to harden up so there was a few soft spots but no risk of falling through with the amount of ice there was. That being said, I was on one of the bay's of Simcoe not in the open part of the lake. Bite was really slow yesterday. Saw quite a few massive jumbos and a couple lakers but they were all just taking a look. Hope everyone has a safe weekend out fishing and make sure to spud if you don't know the ice well! Good luck!

Saw a couple lakers? I didn't know there are any lakers in Cook's Bay. Hopefully you were not ice fishing off K-Bay or the Oral side of the lake (Ops, I mean Oro)

Often wondered myself..Anyone ever hooked up laker/white in couch??? I know they been caught in shallow spots in sum northern lakes..

They are everywhere ,just like whitefish lol.

just drove down to gilford, and there is now a skim of ice across that i could see on bottom end of cooks, hopefully cold temps stay for a bit.

Always an intense moment when you see the Giants swim by lol, a rush that's hard to compare to any other sport that's for sure.

Sure you saw Lakers? Find that hard to believe seeing as they usually come in shallower right at the end of the season but who knows. I was fishing whitby harbour off the pier and one guy was hell bent that there were Lakers swimming around. So I took a peek and there were fish there but turned out to be big carp.

you said you were on the bay? is this referring to cooksbay?

planning a trip with my family to cooksbay (keswick) walking off at youngs harbour park.

any idea if it will be safe by sunday? i dont have a spud, but will have icepicks and lifejeckets

More than likely one of the bays on the NE side of the lake where there is pretty much only private access to the lake, hence usually not reported on by the usual crowds of ice fisherman... To OP, glad you were able to get out and enjoy the lake. Hope you have better success with bites next time.

Buy a spud . Im not sure taking the fam out this early is a good idea but if you do venture out good luck!

No I was fishing off the north east side of the lake. I don't really want to give an exact location on here because not many people fish that spot. I've never fished cooks bay in my life, way too many people! I've fished couch for over 20 years and have never heard of anyone getting a laker or whitefish but there are some monster walleye in there!

As for them being lakers, they were definitely lakers, I see them all throughout the winter. They chase the herring into bays to trap them and feed. We also see lots of big ling (over 10 pounds) but only ever really get the 3-4 pounders. Quite a fight though!
