Wind is a major factor in ice formation even following a full skimming over of most areas. A strong, gusty wind presence can result in significant wave activity. The waves, in turn, can break up existing ice. I've seen several inches of good crystal ice fracture and break up due to substantial and prolonged exposure to high waves. This can be a common occurrence (especially on the east side of the lake) prior to the entire lake locking up with ice. As long as there is open water in the main basin and sections of K Bay, wind and resultant waves can play havoc with early season ice.
