Fishfinder Upgrade

Thinking of upgrading my Humminbird 345 to the Helix 5. I don't know a lot about fishfinders, so wondering if its a big upgrade and worth it.

Aside from gps, lot's of upgrades? Mark fish better/easier?

Need a portable as I go on vacation all the time and rent boats. This will be for open water as well has ice.

I got a brand new helix 5 without gps I'd be willing to let go for $230. Bought the helix 7 instead and absolutely love it! Can't go wrong with helix units.

I have a helix 5 with gps and navionics card. I didn't buy a portable unit but bought a ice ducer and set it up for the ice. have yet to try it on the ice but love it on the boat

i would just go with the boat model helix 5 instead of the portable. The New helix g2 models come with a navionics+ card and is a amazing deal. its fairly easy and cheap to make portable afterwards.

I have never done that before. Always had portable models. Is it has easy as just snipping the power cable and adding crimp connectors? Or is there more to it?

I already have all the portable supplies.. bag(s), batteries, sully transducer mount...

yes, with the exception of adding an inline fuse.

Yes all you have to do is add the crimp or solder connections that fit the battery terminals and you're done.
