Hey gang....we had our best ice fishing trip in the past 6 years up there on the above dates.
Fished in 33 Fow..perfect weather with Sw winds and mild.......18 inches of ice and more so a very smooth drive out to our destination.
Best bite times were from dawn till 10 am each day and around 4 pm with the peak bite happening from 5.45 till past 8 pm.the later it got the bigger the eyes were.
The day bite was solid for perch and plenty of decent ones for the fish frys. These we mostly used small spoons for as we would have spent a small fortune on bait if using minnows. Spooons also got 6 herring
2 of us landed well past 40 walleye on this trip and lost or missed about the same number. In that mix there were all sizes from a few 8-9 inchers, but the bulk of them were 14-15.5 which was perfect.
After dark with large minnow produced the slot sizers with 7 in the 21-23 adn change inch mark. (along with 2 mudpuppers )
Again we never had to venture out of the Condo even though it was gorgeous outside during the day.
Everyone around us was doing well also and I saw 1, 9 and 2 around 6 on ice frrom other groups.
Once again, our best setup was my ultra lite yad rod and 8 lb. test, single hook about 4 inches above and either a mid size or large shiner hooked just under the skin in front of dorsal fin.....the bites were either real picky..smaller ones or just a glom on the bigger baits and a nice slow pull down down the rod tips...
I believe this weather is the factor behind this amazing fishing as Feb. is not usualy great for walleye up there if it's real cold.
One final tip.make sure you change wate in minnow buckets so they are in prime shape...does make a diffference, except when bite is really on, then thye even hit near dead one moved up and down off bottom ever so slowly. botom and up to 3 feet off bottom produced best.
gl everyone.
Wish I didn't get all those calls about a sever winter storm...as we would have stayedd today as well, but decided to play it safe and cam home last nite....so..where is that storm. stupid weather guys
All good nonetheless, we were tired and did well enough.....
