Couple Kooks on Cooch, blowin' up the spot

Not sure if anyone from here was out on cooch this afternoon (Airport Rd Launch) and saw the dudes hauling the ice hut out behind the old school sled.

These kooks started setting up a permanent hut, we heard a chainsaw going for a while then it cut out on them, so I guess they decided the spot wasn't good enough after their chainsaw stopped working so they picked up and moved further out.

As we were walking back we decide to see what went wrong with the ice they were cutting out and walked up to find a whole about 18 inches wide and 4 feet long with barely any snow left built up around it to let passers by know they left a gaping hole in the ice. this was EXTREMELY dangerous, one guy in a neighbouring hut was out with his 3 grandchildren and they all had to walk back right past this.

I should emphasize the size of this hole as the attached photo doesn't really show a whole lot of scale, A GROWN MAN could fit through this hole.

So we decided to find whatever slush was around and push it in the open water to at least get some solid contents in the hole to let it firm up overnight, I stuck a chunk of 2x4 in it so sledders might see it sticking straight up and avoid it. I wish I took the photo before we pushed the slush in.

If one of the aforementioned kooks is a member of this forum, I apologize for calling you a kook, we're all out just trying to have some fun with our friends and catch some fish, but this was truly a bonehead move, smarten up.

Thathoe should have been well marked that's for sure..some people just think about themselves and noone else's well being

Thanks for the post. I agree, we need to do what we can to make it safe for everyone, it's our responsibility to leave the ice in safe shape to avoid an accident.

Thanks for doing what you did and no apologies necessary. Your being too kind. I have stronger language for them. Is dangerous enough out there without having to worry about large holes like that being left unattended or visually marked out.

I agree Dee004, why apologize to someone for doing a bonehead move like that, some people have no respect for others, or their lives, these are the guys that shouldn't be out on the ice with the rest of us, and be banned on the waters.

Some people are idiots. Was at Lefroy Sunday, spudded my way out over a pressure crack to 40 FOW. Asked the 3 guys fishing if I was far enough away or if they'd like me to go farther (Was 100-120 feet away, just giving them there own space, didn't want to impede) they said I was fine, weren't too friendly but what ever. They proceeded to make a remark, purposefully loud enough for me to heard about people spudding out and p###### the fishermen off. Mind you we where not on 20 inches of ice or anything, we where on 3. What they also didn't realize, is that 3 feet to the side of the trail they made, my spud went through one hit. They came close going through, but of course I was "p###### others off by spudding". I know he reads the board as I heard him mention it. If you where the guy out on Lefroy with his 2 buddies in 35-40 FOW past the crack, you came close to going in the drink, and guess who'd be pulling your a## out, the guy you made snobby remarks too 30 mins earlier about spudding his way out and in.
