DRIVING ON ICE, BEFORE YOU CONSIDER PLEASE READ

I think to call people idiots that drive out on ice is improper, just as it is improper to call same when walking out on thin ice, or using sleds

This all really comes down to ice condtions,

I drive with no worries when the ice is reasonably "safe" on 3 water bodies, namely Temagami, Nipissing and Simcoe. Some of these lakes have plowed roads on ice, so when I see that and check with locals, I feel good to go without any concerns.

last year was different and due to lack of good ice, never even thought of driving on ice particularily Simcoe

Going for a good walk or being lazy.really?, I am not going to hike 12-18 k one way for any kind of ice fishing because by the time I get there, it will be spring melt

I totally appreciate the concern of some and agree with you..........if you do not feel comfortable, then don't do it, but don't condemn the rest of us that do and have been doing same for 50 years without incident.

So, walking/sledding or driving all have their inherent dangers at specific times of the year and it all comes down to ice condtions and quality of ice.

Good post H2O and good comments Longshank amongst others. I also have driven on ice for well over 50 years but only under carefully chosen conditions. It is essential that you have been taught how to recognize safe and dangerous situations. I know there are some who never will go on the ice under any conditions, and that is there right and choice. If you don't feel comfortable doing it, then please don't. When I do, I frankly feel safer than when driving on the 400 series highways. There is always some risk in everything we do in this life. It all comes down to what you are comfortable with.

I understand the safety aspect of driving your car out. How about some of the heavy huts that weight almost as a car. But if everyone is worried about the environment, well just BAN ALL MOTORIZED VEHICLES. An then what would everyone do when they want to go for whities or lakers?????? That's a long walk from shore

Great Post FrozenH20 Hopefully people read this and and realize that, the winters have change and Lady Simcoe doesn't freeze like it used to. Like 10 20 years ago we had 3 4 feet of ice now we are lucky we get a foot of solid ice. Let's all be smart and safe out there.

4 feet (or 48 inches) of ice? It would be firm and hard enough to land a Boeing 747 Combi or even an Airbus A380!:-) Or NOT. Or maybe at least good enough to land a small aircraft say a Beachcraft 1900:

We're not talking about the environment here, we are talking ice safety I believe

Also give James a good stick to white knuckle on. And earplugs for the road noise. LOL
