I hate buying minnows since I almost never use more than a few each time out ....I started throwing 5 or so in a bag with some sea salt and freezing them...no fancy procedure and it's been working well enough that I'm not wasting minnows anymore.

Haven't used minnows for lakers or whites for 5 or 6 years. Same goes for spawn for trout. No complaints. Catch just as much maybe more.

I have been buying my minnows at Casey's for ten years or so and it has always been $5 a scoop and what a scoop. Haven't been there this year but hoping the same. Either way I'm driving 6 hours to get there so $5 isnt going to stop me from one of my favorite things to do.
It's alot cheaper to buy the perch in the store already cleaned

I have a place north of the soo and they charge between 8-10 dollars for medium sized duce minnows per dozen and they count them out. Now that hurts when you miss a bite and they steal your bait. It's almost criminal
I use alot more artificial than ever

I try to stay away from live bait whenever possible, but I always kick myself when the bite is slow (or non existent) on artificials...

If you live in the Toronto area, there's a place I found called All Nation Fishing (around Jane and 400)... they sell Large emerald shiners for $3.99 per dozen; here's the link:

http://allnationfishing.ca/2015/01/

They open at 4:30am on Saturdays and Sundays and 5:30 the rest of the week.

This is definitely the cheapest price I've seen around

Don't use minnows! Use some of the thousands of dollars worth of lures and artificial baits in your tackle box! Lol Yes some bait shops are criminals! I only use artificial now! My favorite bait cost me .25c for 8!

Wow. This thread is still alive! (Too much freezing rain to even get going this morning so I checked here.) I'm obviously onside with using artificials, as others have been for many years. Yesterday was following on a hunch to try something different and go a bit "old school" -- without this plan, I hope I would have refused and offered them back at that price.
I remember bait shops in the morning being a place you and your buddies (and several other "red-eyed" souls!) would wonder along the tackle walls and B.S. about catches on various lures. Hell, some of us would just have to add a couple more "new weapons" before leaving. Yesterday's "stinger" sure spun my head away from the walls and quickly prompted me to flee the barn. I know I would have looked for something unique, ....or just another backup lure(s). Be safe when back on the ice (+oC temperatures for the next week -- yukk!)

Nobody likes paying for live bait when it appears costly, but it is what it is. there are places that are still reasonable enough, so I try to hit those.

Going back in time tho.

I recall.

gas 45 cents a gallon!

brick 3 bedroom home in Toronto 20. K

First new car 2. k

first new fishing reel 40.00 bucks...Mitchell 308........wtf

smokes 40 cents a pack.

We can whine, In the end you want to go, you pay. all you can do is look for best deal

Minnows are a staple of the bait shop industry, guess we are seeing the price of hydro and short seasons affect the price. I don't mind for decent minnows but my last $7 scoop were dead by the time I got to the lake, the minnow bucket supplied was bought from the bait shop previously. $7 for a dead bucket of minnows makes me lean towards a $5 scoop.

How much was a 17 ft Lund with a 90 HP on it back then?

How much was maintenance back then?

How much for a pickup truck to haul all our gear..

... And we're complaining over 2 dollars?

I put em in a bucket with clean water and an air pump, leave it in the garage, usually last me until the next week even had some last 3 weeks sometimes.

I used to live in scarborough and there were alot of bait shops there for some reason and some of the best value IMO.
