Chemong Ice Thickness

Hey Guys, Im hoping to get out on Jan 2nd. How much damage did the rain and warm temps do on the ice? probably helped clear some of the snow off and opened it up a bit. But has anyone gotten out near the causeway? if so, what quality ice have you seen?

i was out on pigeon today and there was no more than about 6-7 inches of ice about two inches of that was black and the remainder was white. i would imagine the same type of ice near the causeway. there is no snow on the lake right now and all of the rain water froze. hope this helps

Thanks pigeon. Where abouts were you on pigeon? North or south end? I have Monday off next week and might take a drive to the causeway to check it out and hopefully get a couple gills for a fry but mainly a test of the ice to check it out. Thanks for the update!

I was thinking of heading to Nogies Creek area this weekend. Do you know what the ice is like in that area?

My sister lives on the lake at the south end and her boyfriend confirmed the south is still locked up. but then again, the water is at deepest 6-7 feet... I have no idea about the main lake though.

I have never fished it, however I would love to try a few spots in and near the gannon narrows. but I do know there is a lot of current and am very iffy about that spot as of now. maybe in a month or so

I have the same feeling too, I want to try the Gannon narrows but probably won't till end of January. I think I'm going this weekend for a drive with my spud and floater suit and start checking some spots. The itch is starting burn and no Im not talking about the kind of itch from a bad decision at the brass rail. Heres a pic of my dreams lately....

baitcaster, it is the exact same here. I had a dream last night, where the ice was about 7-9 inches thick and I couldn't catch them but was marking all kinds on my helix. I grabbed my auger and drilled a bunch of holes and connected them, to make a big hole, and dove through with my rod, and started grabbing the fish and hooking them on my line, coming back up, getting in my chair again and reeling them in. even my dreams are showing the frustrating unrelenting itch to get out! im taking a drive Monday up to chemong to test the ice. I cant take it any more. I tried creek fishing for trout to scratch a little, but that only made it worse. I need that first trip to really relieve the pain! the itch is like a dry scalp, no matter how much you try and scratch, it is always itchy and drives you to the brink of insanity! but I keep telling myself, it isn't safe it isn't safe and soon enough, just have another beer and relax, the itch's response: "NOPE ITS GO TIME! SAFE OR NOT ITS GO TIME!" the struggle is real...

The itch will be scratched probably this weekend if not Monday as well. I can't bare it, I'm off to find the safe stuff.

This is what triggered it all for me, on Christmas I went over to my parents place for dinner with the wife and my spud of course lol. They're on lake x, located between scugog and simcoe and I had just got a two piece rapala spud from my wife so instictivly I brought it to test it out and see the ice thickness. No lie 25 mins SE and your at the scugog island launch, 25 mins NW and your at Beaverton harbour.

I only say this because of its proximity to all the warmth we've been having around simcoe and further south of it. So on lake x there was 6 inches of ice almost everywhere I spudded to my surprise. I didn't try the middle as it looked gray, but 60' out of shore where my best catching areas are was 6" thick. The top inch was white but the rest was clear.

I didn't snap any pics of where I spudded holes. I left my phone inside when I initially went out, but I got a couple sunset pics. Enjoy!

Up on chemong td for family Christmas party and there was 2 portables and numerous other fishermen on foot below the causeway. My uncle a local has checked it out with his 12 year old son and says it safe also. Waiting till Saturday just to be sure it is solid.

I was fishing just north of the mallards bay boat launch in about 10 feet of water caught a decent amount of perch but nothing to brag about .... the ice was safe to drive my quad pulling my shack but be ware there are lots of springs on the lake so be cautious and good luck !!

This might be a stupid question but this is the first year I am going to try ice fishing. How thick should the ice be before you venture out?

At least 4 inches of clear ice should be good to walk out on. Safety always comes first though so I would get someone you know who is experience to go out with you if this is your first year ice fishing. Check the Lake Simcoe section for all the tips and tools and gear for a safe venture.
