With a beautiful day on tap I drove up to the Kawartha’s to see what was happening in a few of the lakes. I packed my UL to go after some perch and my usual topwater baitcaster and jerkbait spinning outfits. The fish were biting and it made for a fun day all in all.
What I did catch a lot of were young walleye, maybe a year or two old. I was wondering whether the slot limit that was put in place was yielding any results, and today at least it showed that there is definitely a population of young walleye that were hatched in the lakes where the slot limit has been in place for a couple of years.
Along with the young walleye I also caught a handful of musky that were between 14-18” long which is also a good indication that musky are reproducing successfully in the watersheds they are present in. The biggest musky I landed today was about 36” and hit a Rapala Shadow Rap in yellow perch pattern. The large fish really did a number on the lure, so I’ve got a trip planned to Sail tomorrow to replace some treble hooks. The fish came from a deep weed edge where I was hoping to locate some walleye to no avail. No pictures of the musky as I didn’t want to take them out of the water and my hands were full with a rod in one hand and pliers in the other.
So attached are some pics of what I took away from today…a young walleye, a beautiful sunset, and finally the damage that a musky can inflict on the lures we throw on a regular basis.
