Hey all, I am looking to head out tomorrow to Sturgeon, Balsam, or Simcoe for some Crappie action. I haven't fished since summer for Bass and probably 2-3 years for Crappie. I've always used live minnows and jig heads+minnows for Crappie.

I'm looking to try out some other types of lures for bites. Any kind of setup or equipment help would be appreciated. Thank you!

Slab daddy's, small Swedish pimples tipped waxies or minnows I didn't do bad using that earlier in the ice season

Thank you mate, I will try to pick one of those up if I make it out tomorrow!

For the Swedish Pimples, would tipping em with something like a minnow make the profile too large?

Really depends on the crappie could always cut the minnow in half I like using emerald shiners or any shiners when targeting crappie there also really small and come by the scoop so use some minnow they die or stop swimming throw them to the side and cut em up see if they work better

Bait or lure does not matter as long as there is a slipfloat above! Just ask DB! 👍

Dave.

Welp, today sucked. I bought all my gear and headed out to Pigeon, Sturgeon, and then Scugog in search of safe ice or open water. All three lakes were in between and I couldn't do any fishing...

Back to university for a few months...

Countdown to bass opener?

Stay safe on the ice.

Open water or unsafe ice?

Very thin ice with a layer of water on top. The rain on the coming Tuesday definitely won't help either.

However, on Wednesday the temperature is going to dip with Thursday and Friday looking quite low.

2 days ago Chemong a at least 1' of ice. Way too much water on top and lousey fishing due to front moving in. Sunday Big Bald Lake was freezing but fishing was good. At least 12-14" of solid ice as well. We did see lots of open water on the way there in any areas with current.
