This is the latest in what officials say is a string of reports of abandoned gill nets that have been recovered with thousands of kilograms of rotting fish The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry is seeking the public’s help in identifying the individual or individuals responsible for abandoning gill nets in Lake Superior, near the Montreal River. On January 19, 2017, conservation officers with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry responded to a report of gill nets set in the vicinity of the Montreal River in Lake Superior. Officers located and removed gill nets which contained hundreds of rotting walleye, whitefish, lake trout, rainbow trout, and salmon. A number of nets were still set and actively fishing at the time of removal. The nets were marked with yellow plastic jugs on each end. It is estimated that the nets had been left unattended for well over a month. Since November 2015, officers have responded to eight reports of abandoned nets in eastern Lake Superior and the western portion of the North Channel on Lake Huron. During the investigation of these reports, officers removed over seven kilometres of abandoned gill nets containing thousands of kilograms of rotting fish. The Ministry is looking for information that will help identify the owners of the nets. If you have any information about these nets, please contact the MNRF TIPS line at 1-877-847-7667 toll-free any time, or call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

Just out of curiosity, how many non FN commercial netters are there on the great lakes? If sport anglers have to have their name on simple minnow traps, how difficult would it be to have metal tags on both ends of the commercial nets?

that's what I agree with nets should be taken to ministry and bands like that are put on geese should be installed or if nets are to be placed out people should have to contact the ministry and give them location and times for nets to be placed and removed from area. seem to here about this more and more every year

Its a true shame, a serious & senseless shame that affects us all so negatively & in so many different ways.
An injustice to this world that we live in, that we were given & trusted to "maintain and protect".
We live in a society where "rules, laws and regulations" ,, do not apply to every human being in the same way, which in my opinion is ridiculous not to mention unfair.

Truely sad story. I hope they catch who is responsible and do the right thing by putting them in nets and tossing those into a swimming pool to see how it feels.

Your right, We all know who is responsible, But the ministry will play the " We're looking " game like they do every year and nothing will be done ever, Not one politician with a pair to do anything. Let's all creep around playing the let's be P.C game. They are going to get hydro with no delivery charges, we should pay them to stay home and not fish on top of what we pay them for rent for us being in their Canada, because it certainly isn't ours since politicians had their gonads removed.
