First off guys I'm an avid bass fisherman and have decided I want to start targeting musky as well.
I'm am looking for help with targeting them as in bait/ rod and line setup and anything else you guys can think of.

I live on cooks bay and fish it almost daily so I would love to trade some information with anyone interested. I have a 16.5 ft crestliner with a 50 merc and am willing to travel pretty much anywhere. I plan on going to sturgeon lake Saturday for my first day of chasing musky while others are bass fishing.

Anyways any help is greatly appreciated, feel free to pm me or answer here with any tips, techniques or info.

Thanks a lot everyone !

Hey Yamaha,

Welcome to the wonderful world of Muskie. you probably know, muskie is closed on simco/couchiching as they are working on a restoration project.

If you become a member of muskies Canada, they do have a barrie chapter where they meet once a month as well as other locations. I believe that is a GREAT source of info. My main rod I use is the St Croix Tournament Series Big Nasty with a Curado bait casting reel. (cannot remember the exact model). I have to get a trolling rod, but if you plan on trolling make sure you have good rod holders.

Feel free to PM me if you want.

I generally use 65lb - 100lb braid. With a 50lb-100lb leader.
My main musky rod is a 7 foot heavy power rod to throw those big baits. Bass pro has some good deals on musky rods and reels. I got my whole set up for under $200.
As far as lures go...the main rule of thumb is downsize in spring and early musky season, then gradually get bigger as the summer progresses into fall.
The musky tend to inhabit different locations and structure depending on the lake. My main musky lake the musky are usually in the backs of shallow bays. On some other lakes your best bet is to hit points and channels. Make sure you have a decent net to land them properly and the proper pliers etc.

Good luck getting into em!
