Fizzing bass and walleye

Read Gord Pyzer's article on fizzing. He is absolutely correct.

A bass or walleye cannot "burp" air to release the pressure from 28' or deeper like a lake trout. Reeling them up slow from this depth or deeper is actually detrimental.

Best practise is to not fish that deep, next best is bring em up fast and send them back faster. They can typically resist the pressure for short duration if they are not exhausted by the fight.

One thing Gord did not mention was a heavy weight (1/2lb lead) with a barbless hook or deep release on a rope that can rapidly return them to depth. This works remarkably well as the fish doesn't have to fight to get back down to the 28' level which is one atmosphere greater than the surface.
