its already cold in toronto and I personally think this winter will be a long cold one.

how does everyone else feel?

It depends how far up north you are willing to travel. My guess is early December for first ice

Last winter my first time out was January 1st but pretty far up north and even then the ice was mediocre at best. Hoping for thicker and safer ice earlier this year. Keep in my by this time last year we already had 6cm of snow on the ground according to the weatherman and colder temps. Keeping fingers crossed for an early first ice.

This morning on the radio the forecast is for an extra snowy but mild winter grrrrrr. I hope they're wrong. Just got a quad mainly to access the lake and am building a new bigger collapsible hut.

First ice on Simcoe will be in January I am sure. First ice on smaller lakes mid December. Fishing will be gang busters first couple of weeks of ice fishing I think.

Hope they’re wrong about this winters prediction. Mild and snowy would drive me bonkers.

I've heard mixed reports this year. I personally hope its a long cold winter, and we get first ice before Christmas, but I'm not going to hold my breath. I fished Cooch on New Years Eve 2016 so any ice before then, I'll be happier than a pig in.... well you know.

My wife had to sit me down the other night and to tell me "Dave, I know you want it to be winter, and I'm happy for you, but can you please stop telling me every day..." It's only been since March 14th...

Winter is coming

I love the confidence level of anyone who feels they can be "sure" of when ice will form on Lake Simcoe. Surface temps of the Great Lakes are significantly above established norms for this time of year. I would expect this is part of the reason meteorologists are predicting lots of snow for the coming winter as open water increases lake effect snow fall appreciably. I remain hopeful that we're overdue on experiencing an "old time winter" as the last two winters were not what ice-fishermen would like to see. Fingers crossed but the only real certainty about Simcoe in recent years is that nobody can be truly sure of anything concerning early season ice expectations.
