Hey guys,

With the season looming I have all my gear, auger, vexilar, floater suit, but am looking to upgrade my hut!

I know its been asked 100 times, but what do you prefer? Insulated or non? Ive read review after review and can never get a decent grasp on what to get.

Any experiences would be more then awesome!

Thanks

If you are pulling it with a machine My choice is insulated flip over. It's easer to relocate to find fish.

Back when I bought my flip over, none had insulation so I got the medium sized buddy heater. Unless it's really windy and brass ba..s cold, the heater is usually on low. If it was insulated it would even be more toasty in there. So I guess it depends on your level of comfort. If I had to buy again, I would go with insulated.

Weight is an important consideration for sure. It sounds like you all ready have some gear to haul each outing. If you need a 4-wheeler to get your gear out, it's likely you're going to miss some outings. Go light. You can always add insulation (reflective foil - bubble).
How many days last year were you out on Simcoe with the 4-wheeler? Some years it's quite limited.

Insulated 100%. Burn less propane and way easier to set up on windy days. If you like to run and gun for perch go with a flip. For lakers I prefer a larger size pop up. Hope this helps narrow it down for you. Good luck,

As has been said - flip overs are easier to be mobile - unless the weather is sh!t we often won't even set up the hut until we have a few fish on the ice and want to stick around for a bit or want to warm-up/cook. When we do want the tent up it takes a couple of minutes and we don't even need to stop fishing.

Much easier to set up in wind - in very high gusts one ice anchor fixed to two points on the windward side keeps them fixed when nobody is sitting down. Having everything in the bottom of the hut ready to go makes for faster set up/tear down as well.

I regret not spending the extra cash on insulated. My non-insulated holds heat just fine - my single Buddy heats it up to the point the top half of the survival suit must come off... but there is a lot of condensation inside which will freeze (and on really damp days it'll rain inside the hut!), requiring diligence setting up to dry out when you get home.

As for days you have to walk - it's a bit heavier but two of us pull it out a coupe of times each season until the ice is solid for machines. It is a bit of a workout pulling alone unless the ice is clear.

Thanks so much guys. I agree weight is an issue and yes walking heavier set up can be taxing.

Insulated is likely my route of choice (fish temegami and nipissing as well)

Now to find the cash! Haha

Cheers!

Ps might upgrade my vexilar FL8 so keep an eye on the buy and sell as well!

Blake

I've never heard of anyone regretting buying an insulated hut.

QUOTE (Fishing Rod @ Nov 06, 2017 - 01:30 pm)
I've never heard of anyone regretting buying an insulated hut.

When I got mine a few years back I thought they screwed up because the fabric was and is so thin... It wasn't the insulated material i was expecting.. But it sure does get nice and toasty and much less moisture in the hut...

Buy an insulated for sure, much better. Regular pop ups rain on the inside from condensation, also let much more wind in. Insulated is the way to go.

Insulated and Flipover. Did weeks of research and bought one last year. Also advise that you buy one soon because the decent ones are hard to get the closer it get to the season.
