Kayak rescue on Simcoe

Heard this morning on the news that a kayaker was rescued yesterday on Simcoe. Had his pfd on and was able to get to his cellphone and call for help. Was treated foe hypothermia but ok other than that. Water is cold, play it safe folks!

That is great news. He was lucky. This time of year just having a pfd may not be enough.

Well, this reminds me last Saturday (Nov 4) I was fishing k-bay for smallies on my kayak off downtown Barrie area. It was after 10:00AM, and although it was overcast with no Sun, there was no fog either, and visibility on the lake was quite good (I could clearly see other boats about 1km away no problem.)

I had anchored down 25 fow for over 2 hours fishing without moving, but then all of a sudden a big boat (looks like a 18-footer) with two guys on trolling motor with a big bang directly ran into and hit my kayak (hit the back of my kayak). Luckily it did NOT hit from left or right side of my kayak, or the boat might just run into me myself directly, and I might just be dead as well.

Then the two guys simply left me without saying a word. I was thinking of taking a photo or two of the boat with those two guys, but gave up (didn't want to run into any trouble:-)

That's awful James! I would have called it in with pics as well. How do you not see someone when it's so clear. Drunk? High? Who knows.

At the time there was another big boat about 300 feet away from me, and the guy on the boat (are you a member on this board?) witnessed what was about to happen, and shouted in my direction "KAYAK!" to warn the boat behind me, but before I knew what was going on, it was too late (the boat behind me already hit my kayak).

You see, this gentleman about 300 feet away could see me and my kayak, but the two guys right behind me could not? I suspect these two guys on the boat behind me was occupied with something without knowing what was in front of their boat, letting their trolling motor take control, and just sail and run....

Very close call James, just glad to hear that you are alright.

Hopefully our friend "Karma" will visit these two other guys.

Nope; I guarantee they had their trolling motor on heading lock with ipilot. I nearly had a guy clip me the same way. Fortunately I saw him and was able to yell, otherwise I would've had a ding in my boat. I use the heading lock on my trolling motor all the time, but you do have to look around every couple of minutes.

This must have happened after I left!
We decided to leave because the winds started to pick up and the waves were starting to white cap.
I am surprised you and your other buddy in the yak stayed!

You should have taken pics and reported that guy!

haha. yes with that crazy wind and waves, me and my buddy stayed and fished on kayak until almost 1:00PM. And I landed one smallmouth about 2lbs, and lost another bigger one, and that's that. And indeed I was very lucky:-)

This is why I don't fish simcoe from the kayak.... Well that and weather can change in a heartbeat

Next time bring batmans grappling gun so they can't get away!

But in all seriousness, glad you're safe and sound. Safety on water is just as important on the road!!
