Filling Propane

^ yes, this has been discussed before. Everyone that is doing this is doing it at there own risk.

I've been filling 1lbs for 5 years now and i know what you are talking about, i think some bottles the check valve is not allowing the full flow in the intake direction but no issues with the out, if i recall this happens on the bottles that have the green purge caps but i could be wrong as my bottles are a mixed bag now. I just toss these ones as i have plenty of empties, also if you need more empties just hit the garbage areas of any provincial park and you will find lots of empties, you would be surprised how often i find 1/2 to almost full bottles the cityits throw out

What is exactly the risk if refill bottles outside? I have had the valve failing and I just let the tank get empty with time. Also these 1 lb bottles are designed to the same pressure rating as the 20 lb ones (same gas pressure at a given temperature) so its not like its gonna explode on you. The risk I understand is if that extra pressure messes the valve, you have a leak which goes unnoticed and in a tent or home it causes fire. Also if overfilled, another risk is when hooking the tank to a burner, as soon as the valve is pressed on liquid flows out, and can cause fire if near a spark or flame. So never overfill but I do not see a risk of refilling a tank if done properly (fill outside and neverbring it to home or the interior cabin of a car, fill to capacity).

Also a 20 lb tank in theory should fill 20 of those 1lbers, volume is irrelevant. In reality they fil them (or so should) 80%, i.e. 16 lb so at least you should get 10-15 bottles out of each

I went the 5Lb bottle and adapter hose route. Less than 3 bucks at Costco and my tent is toasty for a few outings. Saves space and the headache of filling the annoying 1 pound tanks.

I once considered 5LB or 10LB gas tank option, but then:

* with 5LB tank, after at most 3 ice fishing trips I'd have to go refilling it, and I know I'd be on-average ice fishing 2 times a week -> too many/frequent trips to Costco? (and whatever left in the tank may or may not last a trip --> so let's go refilling it NOW --> even more frequent refilling)

* with 10LB tank, a bit too heavy to drag around on ice, me as a walker?

So in the end and after all these years, I am still "wasting" money on 1LB one-use-only bottle:-)

You can also refill your own 5lbers. Mr google knows everything lol.

I usually just leave them to fill overnight and all is good.

I have a 5 lbs and always bring a 1lbs with me anyways just in case, throw in a second if you are worried how much is in the tank, a scale will tell you pretty easily tho. the cost savings are impossible to ignore @ $.65/lbs.

I might be wrong here, but the "little Buddy" heater is the small round one that uses the 1lb tank as part of the standing base. So an adapter hose will only work if you can somehow make a stable base in its place.

Adapter hoses for Buddy heaters are for the larger rectangular units. (Portable buddy heater, Big buddy heater.......)

A propane tank is only supposed to be filled %80. The valve you guys mentioned should stop it there, that gives the propane room to adjust at different temperatures. If you guys want to blow your hands off saving a few dollars, go for it. Not even to mention they aren't made to be refilled. Do yourself a favour and get a 5lb tank. I walk with my 5 lber on my pull sled with no issues. Why take the chance?

you are correct. You cannot hook up a little buddy heater to a 5lb tank unless you build a custom base for it which I suppose is a headache and extra space, etc etc.

No, I don't know nothin' about filling 1 pounders! I 've so far only worked with Sunrise Propane Company Limited. I don't know nothin' about propane:-)
