Filling Propane

this video was so helpful, thanks. anyone know what happens if I use an ice cold 20 pound propane tank to refill the 1 pound propan cylinders?
im asking because i store my 20 pound propane tank outside.
should I let the 20 pound propane tank warm up?

I always warm mine up before I start the BBQ this time of year

My BBQ starts all winter w/o heating the tank. Sometimes the flow is a bit reduced but that's not a prob as I rarely put it on high.

the easiest way to refill the small bottles is to purge the air/remaining vapor of propane out of the empty 1 lbs bottle first, i use a small long rod with a slight bend so my fingers are off to the side and this takes like 15 to 30 sec, you dont even have to empty all the air, then hook it up to 20lbs follow the upside down method to get pure liquid into the small bottle and it will only fill about 1/3 and stops, then unscrew 1lbs and purge some air again for like 15 to 20 sec make sure the bottle is not pointing at your face and is pointing up ish so no liquid propane comes out only vapour, the small tank will get really cold this second time. Screw it back on and fill again you will get a full tank, weigh it and if too much tilt it over and purge a small amount of liquid propane out until you reach the 14oz. I just did 15 1lbs tanks this past weekend, no chilling and it took me about 30min total.


use common sense.. open air, no flames, wear gloves as liquid propane is freezing. make sure each tank is sealed when done by ear to valve or soapy water ect. If you are not comfortable dont do this method and go back to freezing or Costco but those who are its so much easier then pulling the small release valve out and no risk of damaging this valve this way.

Freezing works good too just much slower and sometimes you need to freeze the tanks twice to get it full. If you have a tank that does not fill or really slowly fills with freezing method just purge out some of the vapor as mention above, it will fill now. Good luck

thanks, i guess ill leave my propane tank in my house for an hour before filling up the 1 pounders. Heres to me not blowing myself up!!

Just wrap in an electric blanket and run an extension cord to your door. Then when you want to bbq plug the blanket in for an hour before you start.

Just wrap in an electric blanket and run an extension cord to your door. Then when you want to bbq plug the blanket in for an hour before you start.

The only way to truely tell if it matters if the 20lber being ice cold or warm would be to try it both ways by weighing the1lber after being filled from a cold and then a warm 20lber. The scales don't lie. It does make a difference if the 1lber is chilled or not thats already proven.

I just leave it to fill overnight and it's always good.
