Who else has high hopes that they will get to put in some ice time before the end of the year? I'd even be happy to drive a little further north to Cooch or St John for a fix. A man can dream right?

I am planning a trip to couch in 3 - 4 weeks. So excited.
I would not make a solid plan around that ..
It's all open water and it won't even think about freezing for another 2 weeks.. but if it does skim over in the next 2 weeks I'll be checking it the 3rd lol. You can't plan a trip in 3 or 4 weeks without ice the past few years would put the first ice 4 plus weeks still. It was after jan when we started. .

Mid January this year we were up in Huntsville for a hockey tournament and they weren't out yet up there. I think if I recall correctly we actually got out on Simcoe before they did on their lakes. I drove around looking while we were there and didnt see one hut or walkers out. The workers at the arenas told me they didnt think they'd get out til February.

I dragged our permi hut out with a small machine, a couple days before jan 1 about 20 mins north of huntsville.

Maybe the lakes you were looking at don't open till mid fed . There are a few lakes in the muskoka area that don't open till Feb 15 . Is it possible that you were near one of these lakes?
