is it ok to sharpen an ice chisel?, also how heavy?

So just got an ice chisel from canadian tire, its really heavy and has a stair case head.

however the chisel tip has a couple dents, presumably from getting mistreated at the store.

I was using a file on the chisel head and was surprised at how soft the metal was...

should I keep this soft steel - ice chisel or go for something better?

the ice chisel i bought is ridicoulosly heavy, It takes good chunks out of the ice (tested it on my pond)


are ice chisels supposed to be this heavy?

yes...ice is softer than your chisel.

Mine is heavy heavy . Solid steel pointed tip can go through 4 plus inches in one hit. But it keeps me safe I don't need a good wack to check . Some times when the ice is good I regret having as it is so heavy but then again it's there for safety reasons so the extra weight is ok I only bring it to test ice at the beginning or until I know the ice.

Funny this just came up on another board. You should be able to walk comfortably with your spud giving it a good wack with an extended arm every other step. This thing is just way too heavy for that.

It's better than nothing but, it's the worst spud bar I've ever owned and I've had a few.

Feel free to sharpen your chisel. Once or twice a year I run a file over it just to clean it up a bit.

my pond had couple of inches of chocolate milk water, and dead rats in it left over from the fall. when i chiseled the ice and water seeped through, it smelt like death...

This sounds like the Rapala chisel I have. It’s so heavy to the point I don’t even want to use it. I was thinking of modifying it with an axe handle or something. Stop me if this isn’t the same model
