safe ice

want to hit boq for the first time and was any tips on safe ice or things to look out for ?

BOQ is sketchy due to current. Make sure you buddy up and wear a floater. Hay Bay one of the first places to freeze IMO.

I havent been on BOQ myself, but I was also told to go with a guide or someone familiar with the water. A coworker told me they were on 8" solid ice, and not even 50m away was only 2"... Play safe, Good luck if you get out there this season

I will post here when people are fishing on BOQ and general area. But I havent been on for a few years, not since the winter of 24" ice on Simcoe. You know that winter way back when...

There are lots of access points, just search this board for past posts.

As for the BOQ itself, it can be a tricky spot to fish in the winter if you aren't familiar with the ice. A good example from last year is, we were fishing an area with high current on a Friday on just over 4 inches of ice, We went back the Saturday morning and it was all open water. The Sunday it had frozen over again but just a skim. So if you had heard that people were fishing it and saw it was frozen over when you arrived Sunday morning, you might be in trouble.

That being said you can have some really good days out there. General areas for save ice are (hay bay, Trenton and potters creek) (NOTE to the Mods - These are general areas and not specifics) These aren't secret spots and get a lot of pressure but usually have the "safer" ice when some of the bay is still open.

If you are planning a trip I would recommend a guide for your first and always bring a spud with you, even if you see a bunch of people out there. I have been on 5+" and my spud has gone through on the next hit.

I remember them years . I remember one year way back before 24 inch year the gas augers didn't make it through the ice. You had to drill all the way down then break the last few inches with a spud. That was off jp.

I've fished boq every year for the last 5-6yrs . Potter's creek is the first to freeze usually . Boq has alot of current , having a buddy with you is a good idea but don't let that scare you from wanting to go , it just has more current then most lakes . There are alot of spots that are good with low current . Most go out when they find 3 inches but myself I wait for 5' . Of this weather holds up you'll be more than fine . If and when you go talk to someone at a bait shop. Pro tackle is my favourite, they will show you a map of boq and point you to the safe zones .

Good advice here, also, remember, rule of thumb, where theres current, double the amount of black ice you need. Hence you should wait for 5-6 inches before walking out, and 9-10 before taking an ATV or sled out.

I am looking to rent a cottage and fish BOQ in Feb, with a guide. Just wondering if anyone has a reputable company from down that way. Lots to choose from online, but thought I would see if any there are recommendations from the board members. Looking at Sunset Farms and cabins right now?
