I'm with Kingphoenix on this one. I was thinking about heading to Couch this weekend but after ice reports last week and mild weather this week, it might be wiser to wait... as hard as that is.
Stay safe if you do head out, spud every step. I've been hearing 4" in one spot and two feet away it's 1". I want to get out as bad as the rest of you, ask my wife lol she might leave me if I mention ice again, but it's still really early guys, full caution.
If you do get out I hope you'll get a bucket full! Come on Lady Simcoe!

From the reports I am getting from friends down by Gilford, the west side of Cooks Bay probably won't be fishable this weekend, especially with the warm weather and winds they are calling for.

Yeah I was thinking the 23rd. As of Friday it was 4inches of mostly pack ice, then snowed Friday night and Saturday so I can only assume the worst. Hopefully someone will get a good ice report and everybody can get a line wet if not before Christmas then by new years at least. All we can do is hope

and if you do head out on ice this coming (Christmas) weekend, make sure your life insurance policy is up-to-date, policy beneficiary is correctly identified, and policy monthly premium is promptly paid up:-)

Went out today out of Virginia beach. 10 foot of water 4” jet black hard ice. 2-3” of snow on the ice. Killed the dink Perch but didn’t get anything over 9” so kept nothing.
Saw probably a dozen or more guys out. Very safe where I was.
It’s a big area so if you go spud your way out and don’t go alone just in case.

thats insane? why is that virginia beach freeze up faster than couchiching? couchiching is further north than virginia beach?
in my head, the more north = more ice
Not exactly correct. It depnds on weather games. North is colder and most lakes had a skim of ice before the snow dump. The snow was so much that practically stopped any thickening of ice. Simcoe was open when that snow came down last week and week before so when we had that cold snap those shallow areas got some good ice formation. Many areas furthur south have better ice than Northern lakes.

It froze after cooch as well. But there was a few days vb had no snow so all the cold went I to the ice. Lots of snow on cooch it could be a weight off for a while still lots more snow by the weekend . Did not see a soul on cooch when I drove by today .
