Best Braided Tip Up Line ?, Best Braided Tip Up Line ?

I've never used a tip up with a submerged reel. ( previously using set rods and windlass style tip ups ) Just bought an HT Extreme Polar Therm tip up pike and walleye , hoping to reduce icing up of hole in cold temps so LOOKING FOR ADVICE ON BEST LINE for a reasonable price. I'll be using a fluorocarbon lead. I picked up 30 lb Sufix HTP performance tip up polyester braid ( pretty small diam, likley hard on hands) and 25 lb Celsius braided nylon ( larger diam, open weave likley holds water but label says doesn't freeze or kink) . Has anyone used these lines or would you suggest something else? Many forums suggest Dacron line. THANKS!

You have mentioned what can be the biggest problem in using any braid on a jigging stick or a tip-up - braid can be very hard on the hands when hand-bombing a pike or decent trout. The relatively small diameter can really cut. I use braid on all my rod and reel combos but stick with 10 or 12 pound mono (with a fluoro leader) in the two applications outlined when targetting trout and white fish.

I’ve used a couple of those tipups for years now for lakers, walleye, pike, and have 15lb mono spooled on them. Way easier on the hands and has a bit of stretch for when they’re right at the hole and decide to make a run for it. If you use a proper leader ( mainly for pike), you shouldn’t lose fish to break offs. I know I hardly ever have one break off and I’ve caught plenty of pike and lakers up to 15 lbs on them with no issues at all. I suppose if you have to go braid, I’d do like you mentioned and get some thicker stuff so your not all cut to crap if one does run and you can’t get slack quick enough.

I like dacron personally. Mono works but tends to coil pretty bad on those really small spools. You can deal with that by stretching the line a bit before sending your bait down. Regular braid can freeze into a near solid ball when moving locations on cold days - in addition to carving up your hands om big fish.

Just saw a new tip up line called beaver dam it's by acme tackle and it's supposed to be waxed comes in 15 , 25, and 50 lbs test. Havent tried it yet

I agree Dacron Line is the best easy to handle and find on the ice. Add a swivel and a few feet of your preferred leader and you are set. I’ll leave mine out all day and no freeze up
